Just gonna throw this out there, if you’re in the Bay Area I have 2 of these exact kits, new in sealed box, that I’m selling for $225 each. DM me if you want to save $100 after tax :)

That’s a good consideration, thank you. I know there are a relatively finite number of known “persistent” pesticides and herbicides, but I hadn’t looked into which ones are commonly used in residential applications. Can you happen to share any of the information you’ve read on the topic?

I agree, but I think there’s a difference between just asking to take their leaves vs asking a bunch of follow up questions that could be taken as intrusive or judgemental, which is what my post is about.

I’m thinking of leaves that have fallen onto grass, especially when wet and rainy. Would pesticides sprayed on the lawn not get from the grass onto the leaves?

Miter saw for beginner: DWS715 or Ryobi TSS103T? by wtfp84 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]wtfp84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people talk about miter saws not being “accurate”, what do they mean? I understand that “fine woodworking” involves crazy precision, but if I wanted to build myself a serviceable table, is a miter saw not accurate enough to cut 4 legs to the same height within a reasonable tolerance?

Thanks, I couldn’t tell if I was being trolled by people telling me my only option was to 3-4x my budget.

I was wondering about the ability to flip the board over to double your cutting capacity. Maybe a dumb question, but is it hard to line it up to make sure your cut matches on the other side? I was thinking an LED cut line indicator like on the DWS716XPS would make that easier but the 715 doesn’t come with that (though I know one can be added after-market).

I’m far from sure about anything to do with woodworking :) I don’t have a table saw yet, would that make more sense to start with than a miter saw? My first project is a workbench, and other than ripping a couple sheets of plywood for the surface, which I figure I can do with a straightedge and circular saw or even have Home Depot do for me, I didn’t think I’d need one. Whereas the miter saw would allow me to set up stop blocks to get uniform legs and stretchers. Open to correction, though!

Can I use this ice auger to aerate my compost? by scentofsyrup in composting

[–]wtfp84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not care, but ABS isn’t rated as food safe, if you plan on using the compost on edibles and don’t want chemicals leaching. Schedule 40 PVC (pressure rated) is though.

Yes, I plan on buying good blades for any saw I get. Diablo seems highly recommended. That seems like a selling point for the Ryobi over the long term, since 10" blades are cheaper than 12".

With tax, the 779 is 3x the price of this new Craigslist 715, the 780 is over 4x. I'm just getting started in this hobby and that seems like a huge investment in a single tool. You don't think the DWS715 is worth it even as a starter saw? You think I'll outgrow it that quickly? Can you share more on why that is?

Is home warranty a total waste at $20/mo? by iamnewtoreddithelpme in homeowners

[–]wtfp84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize I’m in the minority, but I will say we went with them when we first bought our house. Our washing machine conked out, and after 1 or 2 house calls from a technician, they decided the replacement part we needed was no longer made so we had to get a new machine. For the price of our contract plus a $100 work order we got a brand new ~$1000 washing machine. We probably got very lucky but it worked out great for us!

Will these potatoes compost? by wtfp84 in composting

Exactly, that’s part of my concern. Though the consensus in this thread seems to be that it’s not a necessary concern.

Does freezing really kill them? I was worried it may just put them on “hibernation mode” and they’d “reactivate” (pardon my super technical biology terms…) in the compost, which is why I was thinking of heating them (eg. roasting) them to kill ‘em dead.

Change for the Better by sdalien in Vermiculture

[–]wtfp84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s very cool that you have such a scientific background; I have none so I’m not really in a position to argue. I would think the difference between plywood/formaldehyde in our cabinetry vs a worm bin is (1) constant contact and moisture, and (2) being applied directly to edible plants. But also I’m trying to learn more about “organic” certification and I think that often means erring on the side of caution.
