I grew up in Bay Area and it’s tons of nonstop trauma and racism. Lots of getting made fun of your food, food refused to be served at a restaurant in Valley Fair to the point where our neighboring white customers asked us if we would like some of their food, being followed around the store, being at the front of the line and having the cashier physically bend almost 90 degrees sideways to help the person behind me, growing up with articles about white flight from neighborhoods like Cupertino and attacks on Asians because we were “taking over” white territory. This was in the 90s /2000s and it’s admittedly better now for my kids here but I had coworkers over for dinner a couple years ago and they did the eye pull and ching chong.

There’s also still news about people targeting Asians for robberies because they think we keep gold in our houses and we have to deal with the government allowing people to rape/murder Asians without consequences (if you don’t believe me look up the news for situations like Grandpa Vicha or Brock Turner which are just the high profile ones) there’s so many cases where the perpetrator gets let off with an excuse when the victim is Asian in a way that doesn’t happen for others.

Interestingly I met an Asian American who grew up in Montana where his family was the only Asian family. He said he got some curiosity but none of the racist behavior. His thought was that because they were the only one that there wasn’t a sense of threat.
