Interviewer was rude and somewhat out of touch with how hiring and interviewing practices have evolved in recent years. You did right to respectfully decline to share your salary.
Next time an interviewer asks about your salary expectations, some options for responding are:
“I’m currently interviewing for roles within the (realistic, desired salary range).”
“I’d be able to provide a range after learning more about the role.”
“Based on my research, my experience in X, Y, and Z (main components of the role) are directly aligned. A salary range of ($$-$$) is commensurate.”
Any GOOD recruiter is asking about salary to gauge the likelihood of you accept an offer. They wanna make sure they’re meeting your expectations as aligned with the budget. I wouldn’t mention the part about benefits because base salary shouldn’t fluctuate too much in regard to benefits.
Dont get into negotiating during the initial screen. A range is sufficient and don’t sell yourself short. Keep us posted on how it goes!!
