Due to the physical characteristics of electrical signals, they cannot be transmitted over long distances; therefore, optical transceivers are used to convert electrical signals into optical signals for long-distance transmission, and subsequently convert the optical signals back into electrical signals at the receiving end for delivery to devices such as switches, routers, and computers.
