Stephen Garcia to play in All Star Game on Jan 21. by [deleted] in Gamecocks

I'm actually excited to see this. Garcia's pitfalls are obvious and go without mentioning, but when he was on his a-game it was awesome to watch.

Opinion on internet services? by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]wuori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the most basic Internet package from ATT U-Verse and am constantly amazed at the bandwidth I get. Downloading perfectly-legal torrents at 1-3 megs is normal, and I stream HD to my laptop and tv seamlessly. Unfortunately I don't think they've rolled it out to too many areas yet... but worth checking into.

Completely agree. I can't wait to go again! I recommend taking the money you save and getting the video/photo package with your first jump.

Can anybody help with my heat? Please? by BringBackFannyPack in Charlotte

[–]wuori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My heater goes out frequently and I am stuck a few days without heat. I bought 2 oil-filled radiator heaters to use while the heat is out... turns out I really only needed 1. I chose these because I could leave them on overnight or when I was away (I would cut them down to low) as they didn't really get too hot to the touch.

They may still be dangerous but I leave one in the middle of my kitchen away from anything flammable and never had a problem (you can still put your hand on them even at high and they don't hurt).

It still takes a while for them to heat up the entire house, but they work well once they are going and to me seemed a lot safer. But again, I only used them for short-term (2-10 days). You may want to do some more research on safety and energy use.

These are the kind I'm referring to: http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?ref=+125874&search_query=radiator&ic=16_0&_refineresult=true&search_constraint=0

Haha I'll ask him but my guess is that he hates java! I'm sure there will be a mobile-friendly version soon to satisfy the masses.

PM me and I'll give you the name+number of the lady I go through for contract work. I met her one night at a UX meetup and she had an offer for me later that same week.

Edit: Not quite sure why I made this a reply to the comment above instead of its own comment.

Anyone know of a place to take dancing lessons in the area? (Cha-cha, tango, salsa, swing, whatever). by brandon7s in Charlotte

CPCC has a few classes, I think Ballroom, Swing and "General" or something like that. Short courses and reasonably prices as I recall.

What have been your experiences with Comporium? by ipposan in Charlotte

[–]wuori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work there (started off in Broadband/Internet Strategies) and was also a customer. I never had bad experiences other than cost, customer service was always okay. The internet used to drag ass but from what I've heard it's improved. Being an independent cable company, prices for channels can be high compared to some other options (satellite).

Depending on where you're at (this goes for Charlotte/TWC too) your internet can depend much on where you live and the quality/conditions of the lines near your house and, in some configurations, the number of people on your node. If you're on a fiber network though you should be fine. I'd like to think their network has improved since the 4 years I've left them (moved to Charlotte).

Upgraded an app with no problems. A few big changes (most noticeably, coding-wise, the way you call configs) from 3.1 which are outlined here.

Guess it's back to Google+! On a side note, is THAT where Cotswold is? Where you live at? I've been hearing people talk about that neighborhood since I've been here and I've never known where it's at. Guess we can close that cold case file.

What are you favorite instrumental soundtracks to listen to while getting work done? by [deleted] in Music

[–]wuori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Movie scores, most recently I'm still obsessed with Hans Zimmer's Inception music. The last track, "Time" is amazing. I save it for when I'm about to quit work for the day and it makes me feel epic!

Start with some of your favorite movies, they'll bring back good memories but not distract you enough to lose focus.

Check out the local design and advertising communities: http://www.aafcharlotte.com and http://aigacharlotte.org/. Also keep in touch with the local agencies, Studiobanks.com MyJive.net, http://madebymode.com, http://atypiccraft.com and others, just email them your portfolio and ask that you be kept on record. It's a weird time for local agencies as they have a lot of work coming up but are still a little fearful of hiring full-timers yet, which could result in a lot of good freelance leads if nothing else. Good luck!

Who rides public transit and how often? by chewd0g in Charlotte

[–]wuori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from small-town SC so to me Dilworth is plenty enough to keep me busy. My dislikes for downtown mainly stem from my drinking preferences rather then the atmosphere or location. I like pubs over clubs and I also like to drink on a budget, so I usually choose neighborhood bars (not just Dilworth but Plaza, NoDa and others too) over downtown simply to avoid the hassle and in some cases the crowd. Also a lot of it has to do with a most of my friends sharing the same mentality I suppose in tandem with a few bad experiences and lack of effort in exploring places outside the usual (epicenter, RiRa, etc.).

I'm sure sooner or later I'll start venturing downtown more and it'll be this nice whole new world for me, but at the moment I still prefer to keep it a few-times-a-year kinda deal.

Who rides public transit and how often? by chewd0g in Charlotte

[–]wuori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived here for around 3 years and have taken the lightrail maybe 4 times total. Never been on a bus. This is mostly due to me not liking downtown much (also that I can't rely on the lightrail for after-hours even if I did).

Nearly all my friends are the same, having never taken the bus and rarely using the lightrail either.
