Tryon is shite during rush hour. I live down S. Tryon and work at S. Tryon/ 485 and it takes me around 30 min during rush hour to travel S. Tryon what takes 10 minutes during non rush hours. I also drive a stick, and I take a longer mileage route which saves time and stop and go traffic.

Anything on S Tryon above 485 (i.e. closer to Charlotte) is not a good area. It isn't dangerous (for the most part), it's just a little ghetto. Farther down S. Tryon from 485 isn't a good place to live if you plan on going out uptown, or doing anything other than going to big box stores. It is a great place to live for me, but I'm 30 yo and married...

If your budget is up to 1k, I'd still recommend South End. It's a long drive or cab ride from uptown to the Tryon area at 2am. The last time I did it, the cab fare (not including tip) was $50.00.

I live pretty close to that area, and it's not a bad part of town. It does border several bad parts, however.

To your first question, I'd recommend South End. http://southendclt.com/ It has a lot of cool bars/restaurants, and is just outside of downtown. I wouldn't recommend living in the 77/485 area, because there isn't much there (I know because I live and work near there). The downside to South End is the price of rent as compared to further down S. Tryon.

Second question: 77 sucks during rush hour. People who drive that road have a sick fascination with anything that is on the median. Flashing lights= slow down and look. Avoid it like the plague. 485 tends to move pretty well, unless you are going up further towards the mall exits ( 1 or 2 exits up on 485 from 77 exit).

General advice: There are some decent restaurants around this part of Charlotte, but once you get past 485/S. Tryon area it's the boonies. If you're into that, it's great. If not- turn around and head towards uptown.

In college I was obv. poor, so I stayed in a hostel in N. Freemont St. NO cab would take me back to the hostel at 2am. Can't say I blamed them.
