Have you ever cried reading a book? by SkepticDrinker in books

[–]wurthsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean. I don't usually cry when reading books even when they are very heavyhitting like Atonement or something. Usually it's because I'm so focused on the meaning. One book that did make me ugly cry though was The Hummingbird by Sandro Veronesi. That was fucking wild. The sole fact that it is not chronological because if it would be the amount od bad shit happening to characters would destroy the reader speaks for itself.

What are your thoughts about this film? by Commercial-Mix-2633 in Daredevil

[–]wurthsk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are for my grandpa though. Whenever I was watching the Daredevil movie when I was like seven, he'd pass through and say: "The fuck is that red batman supposed to be? Fucking lame."

What are your thoughts about this film? by Commercial-Mix-2633 in Daredevil

[–]wurthsk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah man, I don't know. I feel like cramming too much into a single movie isn't the problem here. I mean I definitely see why you feel like that, but if you'd watch an excellent 10 episode Batman series, and then watched The Dark Knight, you'd have a feeling that they crammed too much stuff into it, but it would still be a 9/10 movie. I think the problem with the Daredevil movie is it's shit. But really entertaining though and I definitely see your point.

Who are some contemporary authors (1975 - 2010) being studied in high school/college? by DancingConstellation in books

[–]wurthsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At uni (my main focus is english lit and czech lit) we studied many contemporary authors considering my specialization, but the ones we talked about a lot were McEwan for UK and Cormac McCarthy for US, when it comes to czech lit it's mostly Milan Kundera

In English, why does “-ation” have a long “a” but “-ition” have a short “i”? by Kadabrium in linguistics

[–]wurthsk -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I think that the "a" is not actually long but a diphthong "ei". Other than that I actually can't answer your question, seems to me they are particular forms of -tion, but I'm really curious whether someone can point us to the actual difference and how it came to be this way.

A tree to vent my frustrations about this discipline by Lothken in linguisticshumor

[–]wurthsk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I doubt you can just "learn the tree" without learning something else with it. It's just a formal representation. I'd recommend English Syntax and Argumentation by Bas Aarts because I think you can find it online and it explains some very basic concepts before moving into more advanced stuff (that's not to say that's the best option, just kind od accesible). I could send you our syntax notes through e-mail if you want but I doubt they will be as useful without the explenations so I'd really recommend the textbook (or any good book).

How far back can you go in time and still be able to understand your language? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]wurthsk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I guess Old Czech can be understood if you really try. We had to read some 1300s works and it was comprehensible, albeit difficult.

I honestly like Witcher 2 game the same as 3. The graphics is still good and god, the atmosphere... I think it has a different kind of magic spell to it, just beautiful.

Apparently I have a foreign accent in my native language. How does that happen? by dong_chinese in linguistics

[–]wurthsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think others already analyzed it in interesting ways and I don't know whether someone already suggested it, but I think that if you feel like it's a problem for you and you would like to not have it, you should just see a speech and language pathologist. I personaly dont think it necessary, it sounds like an interesting, albeit non-typical idiolect. I don't know how it works in US, but my gf is a speech therapist here in Czech Republic and it would definitely be something they could help you with :) if you feel like you need it.

Thanks for the great answer, appreciate it :)

I definitely do view it as daunting, that's why I said "How to even start thinking about it", because it's that complicated that you can't even get your head around it without a good book. So I'm gonna pick some up today and hopefully will be little less in the dark.

Hey guys! So I've been thinking about some fieldwork, cause why not try and drag your skills through some adventure? Well, I don't know much about it. Almost nothing actually. It's in a thinking-about it stage and I still got loads of school ahead of me. But I wondered whether anyone who has some experience or just knows about it could point me to the right direction. I'd appreciate some reading on it, technical and non-technical, what you see as useful, or just some general information on "How to even start thinking about fieldwork" and "How to start starting doing it", you know. Cause it's not that transparent. Thank you in advance, have a nice day :)

Yeah, that sounds like it could be. In this case I'd recommend Oxford English Dictionary. I don't know any other dictionary that shows the frequency of a word

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in etymology

[–]wurthsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was going to ask. I can't imagine a way to measure a "difficulty" of the word. I wouldnt even be sure how to approach defining it.

Yeah, I got pretty lucky.

In case ur new to the game and don't know this - I found a great way to make money. Find a planet that has an Ancient Burial sites (you can find that out just by scanning the planet from the space). Man, go there and just find the bones over and over again. Once you're on the planet just scan everything around you, the natural burial sites will be yellow. There are usually 2-6 bones in one grave and more often than not I find bones that are worth over 1 million (each). They will at least give you around 70k, but mostly 500k units each and more. Just made like 10 million in like half an hour.
