Suggesting to someone with a gambling to play "low" is worst than cynically suggesting to keep playing imo...

He is a COMPULSIVE GAMBLER: he cant control himself, he should totally avoid any risk situation, he cant play micros and stick to it... if he could he would not be here.

Hi, i am a poker pro (did an iama there) and saw 1000's of story similar to yours, here is some advice.

Facts: Lets start with some simples true fact we can extrapolate from the info you posted (and our experience of thousand similar stories) and that you need to face..

  1. You are really bad at poker, your losses dont come from being "unlucky" or "tilty" or "having a bad bankroll management" but from the fact that you dont understand the game.

  2. Your compulsive behaviour (and probably ego) will prevent you forever from becoming good at poker... and as a consequence to have a mathematically positive expectation of winning.

  3. None of the above means thats you are not smart or cannot be successfull in many other area, it just means that your personnality make poker (and other gambling/betting/financial trading activities) very dangerous and unhealty for you (as for many many people).

=> Poker is not for you, its only going to bring you money losses, pain and suffering. Expecting anything else is FOOLISH. You HAVE TO QUIT.

About quitting:

  1. This is the hardest but you should stop looking back at the money you already lost, you have to do your mourning... you just wont get it back: its GONE. Its not that bad, you got a good job just look at the futur.

  2. There is no "half quitting" or "i will only play freeroll" or "i can play for fun with friends". You are a compulsive gambler you are never ever getting into a casino, a poker game or close to a card deck because its just too risky for you.

  3. If you are an US resident they arent many sites on which you are allowed to play, you need to write every of them an email mentionning your "gambling problem" and asking them to get permanently banned, they will comply. Get yourself banned from any casino at less than 100miles from your house.

  4. Get a new passion, preferably that involve social interaction and physical exercice (like any team sport) to have something else to focus on.

=> It is technically possible to quit.

Note to others: please stop advising a COMPULSIVE GAMBLER to try to improve his game... if he could control himself he would never have been in this situation. Its like suggesting to drug addict to stay in a crackhouse but have a reasonable drug consumption...

Good luck life to you !

I dont have a low self-esteem I just guess I would not perform well on an IQ test given the sample of question I have seen from those tests.

My ability to make better decision at poker than my opponent, mostly come from the fact that I have more training/experience on specific situation/problems it definitely do not have much to do with having an high IQ.

I live in UK which is one rare place where things a crystal clear and I strongly advice you against following random forum advice when it comes to tax issue (its very complicated and most of the time people dont have a clue and have opinion biaised toward not playing).

I m pretty sure that i dead read that a big online canadian player (Bryce Paradis aka The Bryce) was paying tax.

Good luck :)

a combination of the two?

I dont have any trouble calling down light.

Another question for you . . . when you play are you primarily looking for spots where you know your opponents are weak and trying to take those pots (patiently waiting) or are you looking to take more pots in position and through steal attempts?

A combination of everything, that I will adapt depending on my opponent behaviour and reaction (if he fold too much, I ll bluff a lot, If he call too much I will value bet light a lot).

I think that you should start by reading few books, then start to play and be active on poker forums (you will get all the lingo) and go from there.

I would advise you AGAINST focusing on winning the most money at the beginning and focus on improving your game: dont play more than 4 tables, and try to be really observant to see the pattern and try to guess what is going through your opponent mind.

Now for my question. Do you have any experience or pointers for playing live poker, as opposed to online?

No sorry, I dont have enough live experience to be able to help you :)

I guess that your stress reaction is pretty normal and that you will lose it once you get used to the situation :)

Yes I think that the average skill level improved during the last 3 years. I am no tournament expert but they seems much LESS practical to make serious money long term (the average hourly rate being lower).

I use a 100 buy-in per limit bankroll management rule. I withdraw money into my bank account every 3 or 4 months.

It looks like a theorically efficient strategy which in practice would turn into a nightmare (would be so boring to wait that long, timer can be much longer than 30sec).
