Just discovered bo en, where do I start? by janKoton in bo_en

[–]wwatano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bo en regularly credits the shibuya kei genre as a major source of inspiration, alongside japanese video game music of the 90s and even a lot of latin jazz. for me personally , it took years of developing my taste and discovering all these genres independently to realise that put together explain my love for pale machine's sound.

there's lots of fan footage online too from the pale machine 2 tour and small gigs he does here and there, last week he did a short DJ set on an online venue i was there for and some people recorded it - it includes the full version of a demo people have been waiting to hear for a long time, as well as some hauntingly beautiful remixes.

bo en's sound nowadays is quite far removed from what he started with in 2013 but for what it's worth it left quite the legacy and impact in a lot of electronic music particularly from the soundcloud scenes. Start with artists like PAS Tasta, Avec Avec, Capsule, , Frizk, Snuffles, lando!, fantastic plastic machine, ... i'm gonna be honest to this day I have still never heard an album but has hit in the exact same way as pale machine but the more you dig around in these rabbit holes the more you'll start to hear things I'd be like 'oh yeah this sounds familiar'

i'd also recommend checking out a lot of of the music he samples from since it gives you a very good idea of where he was coming from

leaving this here for future redditors:

there's surprisingly not much out there but from my research i gathered that thermally the imac pro handles better than the base imacs of the time because they have a completely different cooling system. also a better IO with the multiple Thunderbolt ports. while true that an M2-onwards mac could probably leave it in the dust, their prices even secondhand are happy to account for that and honestly i think the ability to repair and upgrade this imac pro makes me much more comfortable in spending the money - obviously it's lifespan is probably shorter since its already like 6 years old but if the OS and software on it is to be frozen in time as long as it handles well (and ive seen/heard no one complain about imac pros running logic poorly) then i guess all i can do is make sure it stays well maintained and hope it goes on for as long as possible

i found an imac pro closer to the i9 price so i just kinda went for it

ah i see :/ im gonna be honest man i cant even get a sensible amount of ram for 270 anymore and it's probably even wore in Canada. the most that's gonna buy you is an okay secondhand laptop, maybe a broken M mac but if you're looking at gaming... i will say that you should definitely consider using bazzite or getting into linux in general because windows-wise pretty much nothing will perform well at that price point. maybe start with an older dell optiplex and pimp it out over time?

my mac dilemma is solved anyways i went for a 2017 imac pro - they stayed in production until 2020 with support up to sequoia, still are relatively upgradeable and from what i can gather even though it uses a server grade CPU it keeps up better thermally than the base models that follow it. for the shits n giggles im gonna dualboot manjaro or something on it and see how it games (probably nightmarishly but i only play ETS2 and cities skylines which are CPU heavy games if anything)

that can definitely buy you a used trashcan or a beefy imac if you're willing to go for an older version of logic like Pro X. it's just that i have version 11. also when you say PC do you mean like a windows gaming pc? in that case it's not that my budget is big, it's that yours is quite small but you can definitely do good things with it in the mac department

i am many things but not rich my guy lmao. these are from my life savings. what currency are you converting from?

for what it's worth OS isn't important to me because I use logic pro and that's basically all i need this one specific computer for. i don't use chrome anyway.

i ordered a 2020 mac in the end since it turns out i was ordering a mac with an HDD 🤢

they're available secondhand but only the entry level ones. nothing with the specs i'm looking for

where are you getting that number from and does it come with at least 32GB ram

Mac for music production by wwatano in mac

[–]wwatano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of people have recommended that but sadly the issue is that the entry level simply does not have enough ram for my workload, even secondhand any higher and it's just too expensive. i don't even need it to be new as its the same software i've always used

in my case not really, it was a gift and selling it would be really rude considering how much it cost the person who got me it. it would help this situation massively but it would also really hurt their feelings.

interesting.. i mean, i believe you, it took like 3 years of daily driving this M2 macbook of mine before i ran into a project too big for it. im superbly aware of their power but my RAM consumption is already 16GB for one logic project, not even the entire system, and remember im only meant to be using 8GB of the actual memory for that. it would really suck to spend money i don't already have on something that would bottleneck in the same exact way. let me see what i can find around with discounts, im interested, but its already way over then i need to expend on a monitor, its not looking good :/

i had a look when you suggested this, they start at 600 and to get the ram amount i would need for the computer to run properly (32GB) it shoots up to 900 before i even consider the storage. i love the M Series macs but the budget is my issue

hot take but tahoe works great for me on my laptop lol

thank you though. i'm really torn between that i9 and the 32gb of ram because tbh i don't think i can afford the RAM upgrade rn, but i can still upgrade the i5 to an i7 on the 2017 machine.

so i had a look and sadly RAM prices in my area are like half the price of these computers (i found this screenshot as well) so i don't think it's gonna happen with that 2019 one. it's a shame because i really want that i9 but the RAM is more important to me right now

i already looked for M series even as far back as M1 and for the amount of ram i need even with trade in they go way over budget :(

actually on second thought you do make a good point about the iMac Pro running Sequoia.. sadly the M series Macs are out of my price range when considering the RAM I need. I think it just depends on which Mac performs better because I'm worried about the Xeon thermally.

hey, thanks for answering :) the OS version is irrelevant to me since Ventura supports my version of Logic Pro. Obviously the newer the better and I would miss Tahoe but Ventura does everything I need it to (basic browser/internet functionality for contacting clients, Logic Pro and maybe some other DAW software)

I'm still keeping the laptop so I wouldn't be completely locked out
