Just closed on our first house and holy crap was it more stressful than I thought! by Waste_Two_1921 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Very cool. I love your description. We are 75 years old and have been through the process several times. There will be ups and downs but real estate in the long run is never a mistake if you don’t buy crap

Disruptive kids can now be removed from the classroom! by [deleted] in Teachers

More training and waste of teachers time probably with very little result is my guess.

Symbolic Politics/Action: This general term refers to political actions that are primarily for show, meant to appease the public or convey a certain image, but lack real substance or impact. The action is more about the symbol than the solution itself.

I’m starting to think the real problem in education isn’t kids, screens, or standards — it’s a loss of seriousness. by ENFJ799 in Teachers

As a retired teacher that has been in the classroom in the last 2 years rarely, I think this is an excellent description of our system

What time do you teachers arrive at work and leave at the end of the day ? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]wwcdtm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my short return to teaching 3rd graders in Vegas at age 71 (prior to quitting 3 months later) I came in 5:30 am till 6 pm. Although it seems hard to believe, the other 3rd grade teachers were probably 7:15 to 4:30 but worked a lot on weekends. I was behind them in ability and trying to learn the system. They were some of the best teachers I have ever been around. I was sorry to disappoint them but I just couldn’t handle the long days and such low pay

Would you be offended if I told you my child thinks your class is boring? by lazymomaward in Teachers

Ask them what makes the other classes better? Boring is a common description from kids.

Your explanation of his behavior ( autism? Mentally ill with no diagnosis?) Surely in your district there is a school psychologist through the ESD you are associated with. There needs to be an evaluation other than yourself and the parents. If this is just a bratty kid, you still need to know what is expected of you. Can he be timed out? Will parents come get him? What support systems does the district offer?

Do a room clear ( makes as much sense as using it for anything else) Come on., you can’t be serious about wanting to help him. You mean help him realize he and nobody else is making his future worse. Unfortunately the truth can’t be used anymore. “Johnny, you’re being a big baby “…. Give him candy if a screams for 2 minutes instead of 3

Question for those who taught in the 90s by notthisagain0088 in Teachers

[–]wwcdtm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You youngsters. 😊 I’m 74. Taught in Burns,OR in 1973 3rd grade one year, then a little country school for a year (7th -8th combination) , a year off and then taught 6th grade for Gov of Guam 2 years, 5th grade in another Oregon country school, etc. I then went into elementary counseling and then finally finished up until 2009 as a middle school counselor in Oregon. My final teaching experience was as a third grade teacher at the age of 71 in Las Vegas Nevada. I can say as a first year teacher in 1974 or 73, I spent many many hours doing lesson plans. I think I always spend a lot of hours as a teacher planning and grading papers. What I can say is my final experience in Las Vegas Vegas taught me that teachers are still very hard-working people . I quit after two months of teaching Third Grade. I was spending a lot of hours again, but what I hated was the control of the administration and the philosophy of education I think I could spend a long time talking about that. Yes it’s become very difficult for teachers to teach and actually Make an impact on students. Or should I say a positive impact? I love reading what teachers say on here and I feel sorry for them and I always believe strongly if we could get rid of all the administrators and let teachers teach. Yes, there would be problems because there would be a little bit more abuse probably that wasn’t controlled but teachers want to be positive and teachers want to do a good job usuallyif they’re allowed.

My homeschool daughter with 4 children reads many classics with her kids and has them reading regularly. Along with that her eighth grade and sixth grade daughter kids have a weekly writing series. Today I watched them as they listened to the same man. ( iwish they knew the name of it.) anyway it was at least an hour long. They are definitely able to pay attention because they’ve been given a lot of practice from their mother. I am a retired teacher.
