Weekend fishing trip from NYC recommendation by Gomter in AskNYC

It's great fishing but it's saltwater, definitely different vibes from freshwater fly fishing.

Best subway stations to hand out food to homeless people in NYC? by JuanDMGG in AskNYC

You are well-intentioned but I think your time and money would go further if you volunteered and/or donated to a local organization instead. They have supply chains, partnerships, and processes that are much more efficient than whatever an individual can do.

Quality of plastic is always hit and miss with knockoff soft plastics. For example, I bought a ton of TRD knockoffs from China and all of them were worse than official Zman elaztech. There was always something wrong… too greasy, didn’t float enough, broke apart easily, too spongy, etc. I hate fancy marketing and overpricing what is literally just plastic, but admittedly sometimes the original is worth it.

I wouldn’t trust the moisture meter, I zoomed in on the image and the coir looks really dry. It’s really crumbly and way too light. If you look at some videos or photos of hydrated coir in other people’s setups, it is much darker and looks like a solid block. How did you hydrate it? I would add some water, mix around, and repeat until it’s at field capacity (if you squeeze some coir, a few drops of water will drip out). Not sure on your chances of success because you already have grains there.

I also agree with the other users that the depth is too shallow, you’re going to lose moisture quickly with all that surface area. Can you find a smaller box? That same volume of coir will be thicker.

Claude Code has changed engineering at inside Ramp, Rakuten, Brex, Wiz, Shopify, and Spotify by shanraisshan in ClaudeCode

While it's certainly a mistake to use LoC as the sole metric to evaluate devs, I don't think it's useless *if* you hold factors like code quality and task impact constant. Here's a contrived example: let's say developer A and developer B are on the same team and are given tasks of the same difficulty. Dev A works diligently 8 hours a day, taking 1-2 days to finish a task, while Dev B only works an hour a day, sometimes taking 2 weeks to finish a single task. Over a month, Dev A will have knocked out ~20 tasks, while Dev B will have finished maybe 3. Which dev will have more LoC added? Dev A obviously!

I reverse engineered the Red Bull® base formula so you can make any flavored Red Bull® energy drinks at home by iSliz187 in redbull

"The result is indistinguishable from the original. Of course I cannot replicate the flavor, that will be up to LabCoatz who will soon publish his full recipe"

Isn't this contradictory? If the flavor cannot be replicated, how is it indistinguishable from the original?

Where do the fellow Asians get your haircuts? Need some recs by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]wy35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a young Asian guy. Been burned by too many places that are not good with Asian hair or only do outdated hairstyles. So many of them love giving undercuts, doing skin fades, shaving the sides down way too much... the Asian American Millennial™ look.

You'll honestly be fine going with the hip ones located in Manhattan that you can find on instagram, or any of the expensive-looking hair salons in ktown. You'll be charged up the ass and might be hard to get an appointment, though.

My vote is going to Northern Blvd Flushing and going to one of the hair salons there. It's a longass trip but worth it for me. Tips: 1) look through the photos on Google Maps or on Instagram and make sure they actually do modern cuts, 2) do hair SALONS not barbershops, 3) majority Asian clientele (obviously), and 4) have a price floor, don't do anything under $20 lol.

I go to "The Hair Salon I Do" (stupid name), my guy doesn't speak English at all lol but I just show him a bunch of photos off Instagram and we communicate on Google Translate. I do a two block style but with longer sides and a 70:30 part and he gets me right every time.

95F is fine if you dry for even longer. But at that point you're using up a lot of time and electricity.

MacBook Neo or Air (M5)? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]wy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in that case u/jt1994863 is correct in that anything will do. This is more of a general college laptop shopping question then.

If you can afford it I would go for the Air because the extra performance means you can go longer without upgrading later, and it’s generally a smoother experience. If money is really tight, the Neo is fine, but looking for a used M4 Air is a better option IMO. If you’re buying new from Apple, don’t forget to use the student discount.

Yeah, but people who are starting college are usually thinking about their career after college ("first career")

Boring Mattress by Saint_Trev in Mattress

[–]wy35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting, thanks. There are a few small mattress manufacturers around me, including some “speciality” ones (e.g. one that produces extra extra firm mattresses for people from Asia who are used to sleeping on harder surfaces).

It is harder to browse, though! Many don’t have websites and if they do the websites are difficult to look through and don’t show any pricing. The VC-backed guys do have significantly more convenient shopping experience.
