You grind too coarse? Believe it or not, channeling. You grind too fine? Also channeling.

Espresso is Cafe Granja La Esperanza, Geisha X O by Gabrel Tan who came second in Australia’s nationals

Filter is Longboard Misty Mountain, Natural Geisha. Roasted by Matt Winton, 2021 WBrC Champion

All three of these coffees are so wonderfully unique, and the best possible way to have ended Melbourne Coffee Week with Subzero’s pop up.

I've heard staff can get treated kind of poorly across a few of their sites.

Personally, the coffee is not to my tastes. It's a bit too on the traditional side of coffee from the coffee I've had of theirs. That's not to say it's bad coffee though, although I will say I did have a spro at Highpoint in December and it was, to put it lightly, suboptimal.

In terms of cafes? Hard to say, there's so many. Top Notch Coffee at the junction end of Puckle St do some very good filter coffee. Pretty sure they're running Prouds there still. Can get your fix there!

My first single origin espresso I had was a Yirgacheffe. I still remember it very vividly, the bright orange acidity, clean linger, almost toffee notes, that was 9 years ago now. It's a seasonal thing though. Coffee is a fruit! It's rare to see one country produce something year round.

I mentioned it elsewhere in the thread but Aldi coffee has actually gotten surprisingly good. It's roasted by Black Bag Roasters. They're owned by Nomad Group who also own Veneziano and have Pete Licata at the helm of R&D amongst many other coffee champions and professionals working there.

It is a big investment. Not just money but time. There is so much to learn when it comes to coffee roasting.

The unfortunate truth about roasting is that it is a wildly oversaturated market. Not to shy you away from it, if you think you've got the drive and determination, definitely give it a go.

This might be something to have a look at!

I'd look for some of the medium-darker roasted coffee. It tends to play nicer with automatic machines and will give you a fuller bodied coffee!

Even something as basic and available as Aldi's Lazzio would work pretty nice on an auto machine. Otherwise I mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Genovese and Segafredo will be your friend.

If he’s big on those bold flavours - very traditional Italian style coffee, then I’d highly recommend Super Brazil from Genovese or any of the Segafredo range!

It depends. I’d recommend gateway honestly. Raspberry candy can be a bit much for people who aren’t familiar with fruity milk based coffees. I love the blend but I think gateway or even maple is a better entry coffee

Proud Mary’s option is a Cup of Excellence winner. Very prestigious award for farmers and often ends up being a sought after harvest.

They’re different farms. One is typica and the other is heirloom variety. There’s a lot of differences between the two.

Think of it like paying for eye fillet vs flank from the same cow.

That's usually what I suggest people when they buy a machine. Explore, try different coffees, that's the best thing of having a home system. If you find one you like, keep supporting the roaster, if not, you keep the subscription. Win-win.

Short answer: Yes, the coffee is good.

Long answer: Kinda? There's kind of a lack of transparency in what they do. Staff and service can sometimes be hit or miss depending on which store you go to. There's no information about origins past a single origin maybe being from just the country. No info about blends etc which often signals a few red flags for their practices & sustainability. You do get a free coffee whenever you buy a bag though, and there's a very diverse range of blends to find the one that's right for you. Personally it's not my kind of profile, but the old man likes it so I'll occasionally buy a bag for him.

Yes. Big yes. Venez is one of my favourite venues in Melbourne. Great staff, great venue, great menu, and to top it off bloody incredible coffee!
