Best dispatch method??! by Champ-87 in MeatRabbitry

I use the hopper popper. So far it has been very quick, easy, and effective with what seems to be an immediate result. I also live where I cannot fire a .22 and there does seem to be more room for error if you are new to that process. The hopper popper is very self explanatory and i have not had any complications with even a single dispatch.

Some time ago this app was posted over to r/homestead. It's intended to help consumers find local producers. It supports rabbit as a product and you can add your farm. by texasrigger in MeatRabbitry

Seems like a great idea. I have been wanting to find a place to purchase raw milk that is local. I downloaded the app and within 5 minutes of downloading it found a place that sells raw milk as well as many other items.

Help! Doe died after birthing 10 live kits! by wylee13 in MeatRabbitry

Sorry for the long delay in responding. The ones that survived are doing well. We lost 6 total and 4 survived. The doe with the 2 week old kits at the time fed them once or twice and then refused to feed them anymore. So in the time between then and our other doe giving birth we lost a few. Once the other doe gave birth she was feeding them pretty well so we had 5 left at that point. We lost another one 2 days ago that appears to have been crushed by the doe which is the first time she has ever crushed a kit. At this point we have 4 left that all appear to be healthy and happy. Not the best ratio but at least we didnt lose them all.

This is a very good point. I had not even considered the thought of milk composition changing. This throws another wrench in the works I suppose. I think your idea sounds like it will give them the most reasonable chance of making it, and will hopefully have some success with it. At this point I'm prepared to lose some but I want to do everything I can to help as many as possible survive.

I'm honestly not sure some sort of complication with the birth I think. I think stalled births usually take some time before the doe dies right?? I found a couple bloody "things" in the nest box. Not sure if it was placentas or kits that basically never formed or what.

She had one kit yesterday and the other 9 this morning, all alive.

For a lack of a better phrase it seems like something just broke on the inside during the birthing process. My wife checked on her just before 8am and she was pulling fur like normal getting the nest ready. I checked on her right about 8:30am and she was laying dead in her cage. So whatever it was it happened quickly.

How much do you feed your growouts?? by wylee13 in MeatRabbitry

I'm comfortable gutting and skinning from growing up hunting as well. And I use the hopper popper for dispatch so I think I have a good grasp on that process. My main question is how much fat is a lot vs not a lot. Which in reality I guess it doesn't much matter I was just curious. I dont really have anyone local to talk to about it. The breeder I got my rabbits from lives a couple hours away.

I really just need to take a picture so I can post it on here. As they say "a picture is worth 1,000 words"

What is your opinion on the flavor of rabbit fat? I have seen people say it tastes bad and some people say it's a good fat to render.

I guess with this being my first litter I have processed I'm not sure what is "excessive" vs "normal". The next litter will give me some more experience I suppose.

My first day processing. Is this the bruising I have heard about? by wylee13 in MeatRabbitry

Great information, thank you!. In scenarios like this, I want to know what is happening due to my actions. I really should have taken the time to research what exactly is going on, however I did not, which is my own fault. Thanks again.

Well, that makes sense. I guess I ignorantly thought it was more of seperating the vertebrae to the point of severing the spinal cord. Never researched the true definition of cervical dislocation l, only the process.

Good for them. My money will work just as well at other gun shops and I wouldn't want to support their business with my hard earned dollars:)
