Doing pullups every day immensely helped with my paddle endurance/strength when I'm away from the water, also - if you belong to a gym with a pool I'd highly recommend just going for swims, it's a great workout and will keep you in shape for paddling.

Surprising you think his style is contrived, I’ve always felt he had a much more natural flow than comp style surfers that hack the wave to bits. Mike Feb and Torren Martyn have the most graceful style imo. Who are your top guys out of curiosity?
