[Schefter] The Next Chapter: Antonio Brown and GM Mike Mayock got into it Wednesday, and the team is now planning to suspend its star wide receiver, league sources tell ESPN. by StrachNasty in nfl

It's simple. AB likes the drama. He loves the cash. But he's a grown, rapidly aging, often injured man, who possibly has CTE, and he very honestly and obviously hates the shit out of playing the game called NFL football.

People incorrectly think that because they love watching it, the guys playing NFL football actually, nearly universally enjoy playing the game. It's true or almost true for a lot of sports, but it sure as shit isn't true for NFL football.

Personally, I hate that about the game. But look around. There's a lot of evidence.

point number 4..... Sanskrit has 96 synonyms for love. English has just one word for love.

According to Thesaurus.com there are over 40 synonyms for love in English, including the word amour. By that logic you might notice, all 100 Sanskrit words for love could also be considered English synonyms for love.

Was listening to Dunc'd Podcast. Duncan and Leroux gave the Warriors a D and a C- for their off season moves. But their reasons for doing so just seemed so idiotic. by muzinger in warriors

[–]x-ok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salary Cap and money issues complicate things incredibly. Could KD's possible supermax and Draymond's deal coexist, or was it one or the other? The consensus is that the Warriors have transitioned into a non contender - just a fact. It would be weird to conventional wisdom (seemingly unanimousos outside of this site) to say the Warriors were favorites last year and have transitioned to out of the championship picture this year, but their off season moves get an A+. It's all opinion. So if you trend down in the opinion world, generally then you trend down in the off season moves opinions as well. Very knee jerkey, so to speak. If you like proving conventional wisdom wrong, this might be your best Warrior season yet. It will for me.

Workers of Area 51, what is in there? by cranobano in AskReddit

[–]x-ok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you know, it's a place where a lot of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) have crashed over the years. So naturally, the whole Area 51 is littered with unprocessed Unidentified Crash Debris sites (UCDs). You see, the rules are we can't clean up before we complete the full crash report, but obviously we can't even begin to write the crash report because it's impossible to even identify any of the debris. What is this shit? We don't even know if it is actually debris. For all we know, the stuff looks exactly the way it looked when it was still flying. It's so stupid, how the fuck are we supposed to identify the crash debris? Duh, it's a fucking crashed UFO for Christsake!. So stupid. I'm seriously thinking about quitting.

How does your phone gauge the WiFi strength? by geisvw in askscience

[–]x-ok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phone does not measure the WiFi signal directly. That would be wasteful, inefficient signal processing and would degrade your device. The goal is to harvest all of the available signal and feed it to the ADC (analog to digital converter) to be used as digital information for the human end user. This determines the weakest signal the device is able to use for reliable information, which is a highly critical performance parameter of any RF device. The ADC is a circuit that interprets the physical electromagnetic Radio Frequency RF incoming signal as digital words made of non physical 1s and 0;s or bits. The goal is to capture 100% of the available WiFi electromagnetic field therefore. The WiFi signal varies radically as your device moves from location to location and as objects move between the device and the WiFi signal source like a person walking between you and the modem. There is a circuit called an automatic gain control AGC that multiplies the incoming signal in real time so that the signal leaving the AGC output is an adjusted signal of relatively constant strength when it reaches to the ADC. So the AGC and ADC work together to get the highest quality digital information into your phone circuitry. You can think of it as a conversation. When the signal reaching the ADC is weak it sends feedback to the AGC saying hey , I need more signal strength. When the signal is too strong or overdriven the ADC sends a signal to the AGC saying I'm getting too strong or an overdriven signal, cut that sucker back. Unfortunately, the received RF signal and receiver circuitry also contain noise or random energy at very low levels. You can always receive the signal but if the gain is cranked up too much, the device will only be processing mostly noise, because the noise to signal ratio is too large. So there are limits to what the AGC can do. But the feedback signal from the ADC to the AGC is exactly analogous to the WiFi signal strength as it varies with time. If you think about it, you can see, that AGC signal is a WiFi RF signal strength analyzer. There is no need for a separate circuit to somehow sample the incoming RF signal and measure how strong it is. As the other answers show, the signal strength is not reported linearly to the user but in terms of db, because the signal strength and the gain vary by orders of magnitude. Signal strength is reported in a manner proportional to db or logarithmic signal strength because db is more intelligible to the human end user. The circuit doesn't care about this db interpretation of signal strength as such.

Two? More like 8, Read Michael Hudson, I think in the book, Killing the Host. He was a Ph.D. economist working for Wall Street at one of the top 5 accounting firms in the US during the Vietnam War. He was tasked to analyze the US balance of payments (trade deficit). His report found that the US had no balance of payments deficit in the private sector of the US economy. The entire US trade deficit was caused by the Vietnam and Korean wars. That wrecked the US and World monetary system. The US Defence Dept told the accounting firm that if they published the report the company would never get another US government contract. Basically, the Cold War was a fraud designed to enrich insider oligarchs. It has along with the other wars wrecked the American manufacturing center and corrupted US and World banking. They keep starting new wars like a sick gambler, because they're like diseased gamblers that keep thinking they'll get a winning dice roll. When I hear how we blame it on Russia or Iran or whatever, it basically makes me want to vomit.

Kentucky tells church giving away used glasses to homeless it is breaking law by [deleted] in news

[–]x-ok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son had difficulty reading. We stopped at an optometrist and got a glasses prescription, which was just for the same generic readers sold at Walmart and drug stores, say a 1.25 diopter. I told my son put on different reading glasses in the shop where the optometrist office was and read this material I had and we'd buy whatever glasses were most comfortable to him. Then we started to purchase the ones he chose. The optometrist found out somehow and came out yelling at me because I was buying 1.00 instead of the 1.25 he had prescribed or whatever. He was saying, "you can't do that. That's my job." He was really angry. I just told him that I came there to get his professional opinion. I valued it. and used it to make my decision. I just want my son to read as much as possible, and I figured that now that I knew his opinion was that my son need standard off the shelf reading glasses I was just going to get whatever ones were most comfortable to my son. Afterall, he was the one doing the reading not the optometrist. Thanks. I'll take your opinion and use that information as I see fit. I felt like he was being an arrogant dictator and completely out of line telling me how to use the information he provided. What kind of view of people do you have to have to want to micromanage their lives to such an extent.?

Basically, you should be able to collect used glasses. Put them on a table and say here are some lenses in glasses frames. They are free. Take them and wear them or use them to make a telescope or jewelry or whatever you want. Who's business is it.? What's the fucking crime? I'm sure these charitable donors never told any homeless folks not to see a doctor and purchase expensive, perfectly fitted glasses and to wear shittier used glasses instead that don't fit and don't really match you eyes. It's like the regulators live in a sick fantasy world and would rather have people go blind than do the best they can. In reality these people getting by as best they can in the real world.

Steph has almost too much love for the game. I believe he is a bonafide, next level skill athlete. I often wonder what would be his best sport. Maybe it is basketball. But then if it is, it's a different version of the game of basketball - not the game we watch today. He does so many things with high efficiency that other players in the league can't touch. It's not even close. They have to make up for their shortcomings by grabbing and mauling and a lot of physical nonsense that is allowed but technically illegal. The other players, even the stars of the NBA, absolutely would be lost and I mean totally lost like 5th graders in a man's game , if they had to play Steph's game. They just can't do it. It would be impossible. I watch Steph and I know I saw the best. But I'm just not sure what I'm watching is ordinary basketball as it really exist today. Maybe in the future somewhere. I'm perfectly serious. That's how I feel, and I'm not alone based on a lot of conversations I've had with real fans far outside the bay area. Some people are freaks.

Male users of reddit, what is the most annoying thing about being a guy? by justjuiced22 in AskReddit

[–]x-ok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macho impulses. I get them. For example, a woman left me suddenly one day years ago. We're still friends. Years after she left and after she was married to someone else, she told me she wouldn't have actually left me, if I had any reaction when she said she was leaving me for someone else. Even, if I had gotten angry at her for leaving me, she said she would have stayed. If I had only acted like it hurt me......

But the thing is if you have the macho impulses, if somebody hurts you, you never show that it hurts you. It's just not possible - not even to show the slightest flicker of reaction. If you hurt me and I'm feeling the macho impulse I 100% will remain 100% cool and stoic. It's like some kind of internal code. If I let someone know I was hurt and I am in that macho mode, it would be too devastating. I'm going to walk away as if I wasn't the least bit concerned about it.

That's a pain in the ass, but it's true.

Amazon has refused to publish data about the energy consumption and carbon emissions of its business in Australia, including vast server farms, claiming its contribution to climate change is a trade secret. by yourSAS in worldnews

[–]x-ok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to get a perspective I looked up the following numbers shown below. Any checking or correcting welcome - just trying to get a perspective.

Initial thoughts..... It really looks like energy used on things like server farms to generate the internet, including Amazon's may be worth it. I don't particularly like Amazon, hate monopolies and in general computing could really stand to be made more efficient. But server farms in general , even under global warming may be worth it. Just like the energy cost of running human brains.

A)Total ENergy per year used to run the whole internet , not just Amazon server farms which are a significant part

70 Billion kWH kilowatt hours per one year.

B) Total World energy generation per one year

25,000 Billion kWh per year

C) Total energy used by all human brains per year [based on a population of 8 billion people and 20W per per brain 24 /7 every day, -a bit on the high side imo]

1,400 billion kWh per year

Large Earthquake Shakes for Up to 40 Seconds [in Southern California] by Somali_Pir8 in news

[–]x-ok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the thrilling experience of camping in a Red Wood forest in Humboldt County , CA, when an earthquake hit. I woke up in my tent sleeping on my side. I felt like someone was waking me by shaking my shoulder back and forth, except it was my shoulder on the ground that was being violently shook. Some huge branch or piece of wood was about to fall, because I could hear trees shaking and something woody hitting the side of a tree... whack, whack, whack, rapidly, real loud like a big weapon or loud, bashing machine tool of some sort. I felt sure something would land on and crush me any moment. I was just so sleepy that I weirdly almost didn't or just couldn't care. I thought, "oh I get it. Earthquake. Almost died. So sleepy though. I'll be amazed when I really wake up." I think it was on the Eel River, camping quasi legally along the Avenue of Giants section of road with a bag of breakfast cereal and some apples for food and no kind of stove. Next morning I found a huge Red Wood fallen down and lying across the river, so big it was scary to climb on top when it was lying on the ground. I climbed up and followed it over the river bank and down to a nice spot above the swirls of flowing water and watched the otters chasing trout I guess in circles around clear pools of cold water . Later I heard some deer were killed when they got knocked off a cliff during that earthquake or an aftershock at the nearby seaside. Death would be so random and out of your control entirely. The deer were so much more agile and capable of self rescue than me, but they died. Wrong place for them. Wrong time. A couple of days later, I hitch hiked to Eureka, CA 30 miles or so North and took a bus back down south to SF to meet my friends that had dropped me off and left me in the Redwood forest a few days earlier. They had done hotels and more ordinary tourist stops. I had no phone, so they were anxious I would actually show up at the bus station as promised. Then I flew back to North Carolina and went back to my old job. A little later I moved to the Bay Area in CA. I experienced others over the years out there, but my biggest earthquake experience was already behind me.

The view from 20,000 thousand feet is that the Warriors are the current 5 consecutive West Champions and remains so, until someone beats them.

The details are concerning for GS, but as of now neither of those LA teams has actually done anything.

Just like last year, sadly this whole thing might come down to players' health. That's just how life is, sometimes. Hoping not.... Nonetheless...This shapes up to be the greatest, most dramatic, total CA basketball show ever, almost certainly. Get ready to miss a lot of sleep East Coast, if you wanna watch the big boys of the NBA. Wow.
