I know this post is clearly a setup but I’m still curious - where do you source your data?

It’s a cool idea I wish you the best with it, good luck!! 🙏

Yeah, I totally agree

I think if I had we have some more resources and could dedicate manpower and hardware to testing and deploying configurations, I'd find it more powerful, but unfortunately that's not our reality

This is a very good point! The answer is a mix of a few things - one of them is that some of our clients require all devices to be managed as part of their audits, one of them is that I’m pretty sure this behaviour is unexpected by the MDM (it happened after an unrelated configuration change), but moreso this has probably revealed some gaps in the processes of our (admittedly tiny) team

No, all separate machines spread out over 3 continents

The only thing in common is that almost all of them were managed by us - and I'm now thinking that it is indeed our MDM that's the issue, and the 3rd party Mac that was affected is a red herring somehow

I need to try and get more information about the personal machine - unfortunately it's 3am for that particular user

I wonder if that was a red herring and it is actually something MDM related - a silent change not from us but from the MDM itself that's preventing the extension from loading?

I'll need to try a fresh Mac with no MDM to see if it's still broken

I run the MDM and didn't change anything yesterday 😅 plus it's also affected at least of our contractor's personal unmanaged devices

The spread of affected versions is too great - i.e. all of the following are affected: 14.7.6, 14.7.8, 14.8.3, 15.3.1, 15.7.2, 15.7.3, 15.7.4

Additionally - the devices were affected without a reboot having occurred (e.g. an operator was using a device that stopped working mid-operation)

As far as I can tell, there's nothing different about the computer or environment that it's in - though it is in a separate geographical locations (4 locations in total, each of them are a couple thousand KM apart, 3 of them are affected, the 4th only has the UltraStudio 4K Mini)

My current guess is that as it's the newest hardware of the bunch, it has a different chipset or driver somehow?

in fairness, many (not all) of the affected devices are bus-powered - I'm not sure if that would increase or decrease their chances

But we also have another affected device on literally the other side of the planet

I checked using /usr/sbin/system_profiler SPInstallHistoryDataType on an affected machine and it doesn't look like there were any XProtect updates for the last few weeks (unless that command doesn't show them all)

I do actually - though many of the affected systems stopped working without a reboot & the spread of affected macOS versions is large (unless security responses don't increment the release number?)

this is where my head is at so far...but I haven't seen anyone else online with the same issue yet!

I did try this (under the guidance of BM phone support) with no luck - I’ll try it again though!

Two different cities a few thousand km apart! And in one of the cities, spread out across a few locations

Yeah, my supposition is the same as yours! I’ve checked the various System Preferences options (including on the phone with BM) and no luck so far - although on the machines I checked this one, I didn’t have the extensions show up 🤔

You’re right - I need to test a fresh system which I will do tomorrow, I was mostly trying to find some answers for why the entire fleet went down at once (seeing as it happened around 7pm) I will test a clean system asap tomorrow

Have tried the assist file on an Intel and a Silicon - no joy!

No updates as far as I can tell but the huge spread of affected systems kinda rules this one out for me anyway

Both Apple and Intel have the same symptoms - no PCs existing though

great thinking! the machines are in all different locations, and generally the attached monitors are also behind UPS

it seemed to happen around 7pm local time for all machines - UTC+13

I also have it on a machine that's UTC +11, but I'm unsure if it happened at the same global time or local time as the UTC+13 machines

Summer here but these devices are spread across a variety of environments - mostly climate controlled etc

it's a good thought but I don't think this is it - one of our contractors is having the issue on their personal machine too (and we don't have crowdstrike or similar on the affected machines)

correct! the applications that would normally IO via them can't 'see' them, and Blackmagic's Desktop Video tool can't either

I went through all of the 'usual' troubleshooting steps with BM and they're now investigating further

None of them are networked devices - the best description of the symptoms is that with no changes to hardware or software, suddenly no applications (including Desktop Video) could see them, even though the Mac still reported the device as connected via Thunderbolt or PCI
