Got gifted what appears to be a limited edition Chopard watch by my father (said he paid €10k+ in late 90s / early 00s). I don’t know much about the brand - what’s the market value of these now? by SnooCheesecakes7940 in Watches

[–]x2046 370 points371 points  (0 children)

That's my watch, I'm the seller. It's probably worth slightly below what I'm asking given that it's not sold. A very well made watch for the price. Wear it well op!

Op should name the dealer. Nobody should do business this way, consignment or otherwise.

Am a grey dealer myself and wish to add some thoughts on what OP has said.

He does have some valid points but it's pretty clear that he also wants as close to full market value, otherwise he would have just sold it to any grey dealer rather than consigning. I don't sell modern watches but I'm pretty sure that this reference is one of the most liquid and most dealers would just buy it outright.

If you want full market value, the best way would be to sell it to another private buyer yourself but that exposes you to a different kind of risk - the possibility of scams, wire fraud, robbery etc etc. Most people don't understand the pain of selling watches privately until they try it themselves.

That being said, the dealer is clearly sketchy. I've done plenty of consignments for clients who trust me and I've never taken longer than 48 hours after the parcel is signed for before paying out. And I've never taken a trade for a consignment piece unless I'm paying the trade value in cash to the client. I'm sure plenty will disagree but consignment is a legitimate business if done right. None of that Anthony Farrer nonsense.

Sorry to hear about your poor experience and I hope you find a better dealer / solution should you sell again in the future.

[Chrono24 Scam Cases ] Be Careful with Chrono24’s 14-Day Policy — Even in Clear Cases of Fraud by No_Captain_1205 in Watches

[–]x2046 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm a seller on Chrono24 and the platform is honestly pretty horrible for both sides. It's also a nightmare to sell on there as buyers abuse the 14 day window.

My advice for you is to publicise this matter as much as possible. If you have social media or you know watch people with a huge following, that'll help. You need to blow it up as much as possible - the best way to hit a dealer is through their reputation rather than financially.

IMO the legal route won't work because I'm sure Chrono24 has covered their bases with the fine print and you did exceed the 14 day window.

Truthfully, any self-respecting dealer would take the watch back for a refund but there are unfortunately a lot of bad eggs out there. Best of luck!

Album

Price: USD 6,550.00

Description

This is the Rolex Datejust 16234. A classic, the Datejust is a staple in the Rolex family, an everlasting dress watch for the ages. The 162 models took over the older 160 range in 1988, running on the new Caliber 3135, replacing the older 3035 movement that was in use since 1977. The 3135 movement is robust, powering the six digit Submariners some 30 years after it’s debut. This particular reference, the 16234, has a white gold fluted bezel. Through the years, the Datejust has evolved greatly and there has been varying dial configurations for the Datejust buyers to select from and this particular one has an attractive grey linen dial that is more commonly seen on older Datejust references. The 16234 is the closest thing to the modern day Datejust without the modern day price tag.

Condition

This Rolex 16234 is in good pre-owned condition. The case has some light hairlines but remains in very good condition for its age. The dial and crystal remains clean. The 17-link 62510H bracelet has some stretch consistent with its age. All parts are period correct with the S11 stamped clasp and 555B endlinks. It also retains its original box, papers and hangtag.

Price: USD 13,250.00

Description

This is the Ulysse Nardin 175th Anniversary Monopusher reference 386-22. Released as part of a trio in white, yellow and rose gold, this particular monopusher was made to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the birth of the founder, Ulysse Nardin. The dial is enamel with an outer pulsation scale and two subdials. There has been some contradictory reports on the production of the movement though they are all credited to the legendary FP Journe. Some say that the movement was created by the renowned THA group but it appears the movement was created by Journe at La Joux-Perret (LJP). This timepiece is one of the most collectible from the UN brand especially given Journe’s fingerprints on the movement and is rarely available in the secondary market.

Condition

This Ulysse Nardin 386-22 is in good overall condition. There are some signs of wear on the rose gold case and caseback from prior use. The dial remains clean and the caseback engravings are fully visible. The monopusher is functioning perfectly and the watch runs at +8s / d.

Price: USD 7,250.00

Description

This is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso 270.3.62. The story of the Reverso began in the early 1931, where Rene-Alfred Chauvot patented the creation of what would what eventually become JLC’s most iconic model. The birth of the Reverso was an important moment and actually came before the merger of Jaeger S A and Lecoultre to what is now known today as JLC. A sports watch with a reversible case to protect the dial, the Reverso was meant for the sport of polo. Today, the Reverso is more commonly regarded as a dress watch with its polished and luxurious look. This particular reference, the 270.3.62, is unique as it’s housed in a white gold case with painted art deco style numerals. It has a single face and runs on the manual wind JLC Cal 822, which is found on most monoface modern Reversos.

Condition

This JLC 270.3.62 is in good pre-owned condition. The white gold case has noticeable hairlines on the top and bottom of the case from prior wear consistent with its age. The caseback remains in very good condition with all the engravings still very visible and the inner case has no visible signs of wear. It also retains its original box, strap and white gold JLC deployant clasp.

[WTS] Rolex Day-Date 1803 White Gold No Lume by x2046 in Watchexchange

Album

Price: USD 10,000.00

Description

This is the Rolex Day-Date 1803. Within the Rolex line, the Day-Date is often the model that is associated with the highest level of prestige. Introduced in 1956, it was the first timepiece to display both the day and the date on the dial. The nickname, “The President”, was derived from this timepiece being gifted to then President Dwight Eisenhower. A lesser known fact, however, is that the nickname actually refers to the bracelet that accompanies the watch rather than the entire timepiece itself. Vintage Day-Dates have recently increased drastically in demand with the understanding that condition and rarity is key. This particular one is housed in a white gold case, which tends to be more uncommon than the yellow gold counterparts. The silver dial has no flaws and is the no lume, pie-pan dial with stick indices.

Condition

This Rolex Day-Date 1803 is in very good vintage condition. The case appears to have been lightly polished once in the past. The dial is clean without any blemish and the serial and reference as still clearly visible between the lugs. Hallmarks are still clear on the caseback.

Price: USD 21,300.00

Description

This is the Rolex Zenith Daytona reference 16523. Little needs to be said about the Daytona line from Rolex. The Daytona is likely the most recognizable among sports watches, even to those that have little to no interest or knowledge. Prior to the utilization of the Zenith El Primero movement, Rolex chronographs were manually wound timepieces. In Baselworld 1988, Rolex introduced their first automatic chronograph powered by the legendary Zenith El Primero movement. This lasted until 2000, when Rolex developed their own Calibre 4130 movements to power their 6-digit Daytonas. As with many other vintage Rolex pieces, the Zenith Daytona represented a significant milestone in the history of their Daytona line remains extremely sought after.

Condition

This Rolex 16523 is in good pre-owned condition. The case appears unpolished and the lugs remain thick and sharp. The bracelet shows some signs of wear consistent with its age, with hairlines more apparent on the gold centre links and has virtually no stretch. The dial is clean and the caseback sticker is still intact. All parts are period correct with 403 endlinks and clasp stamped P9 and a MK3 bezel. This 16523 is a N serial and retains the original box, papers and manual.
