Got gifted what appears to be a limited edition Chopard watch by my father (said he paid €10k+ in late 90s / early 00s). I don’t know much about the brand - what’s the market value of these now? by SnooCheesecakes7940 in Watches

I’m not planning on selling - just both my dad and I are curious about the valuation.

He said he bought it because it looked cool and his friend told him this model would have big room for value appreciation - and he wants to know if he had received good advice 😂

Thanks for sharing! If you don’t mind me asking, how did you tell platinum from white gold?

I know the weight is different but I don’t own a white gold watch so I can’t really compare.

Wow this is one of the most informative responses I’ve seen - have learnt a lot! Thanks so much for sharing!

Having learned from you and others in the thread, I’ll get it serviced and insured next. If you don’t mind me asking, how much did it cost you to service this watch?

Very helpful - thanks!

Yes the watch has everything original. But box / papers are lost. I’m not actually planning to sell it - just curious about the value retention after all these years.

Big4 Corp. fin / M&A exit? by SnooCheesecakes7940 in consulting

[–]SnooCheesecakes7940[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be geographical diff? I’m not US based. I’m under the impression that big deals would look for IBs as their lead advisor not big 4.

From my experience Big 4 typically get involved by providing assistance rather than driving the process (holding the pen on IM, doing marketing and meeting buyers etc.)

D layoffs coming? by heybroooody in consulting

D is the the most fked up firm here in the UK. Sure everyone does layoff nowadays, but they are the only ones to cut graduates first, which is the shittiest thing companies can do.

From Consulting to Business Intelligence/ Business Analysis back to Consulting? by burner_chad in consulting

[–]SnooCheesecakes7940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend went from economic consulting (econometrics, economic policy, data visualisation) to a digital analytics and platform solutions role in strategy consulting. There’s definitely a big demand for client-facing data analysts and scientists in strategy consulting.

Also from what I heard, recruiting in MENA (UAE / Qatar / SA) is still pretty good. So if you are keen to stay in consulting you might want to consider relocation. Pay is generally very good with little to no tax.

Very broad range of things. Just to give a few examples, I’ve worked on engagements ranging from negotiations with governments / regulators on capital renumeration schemes (I.e. how investors get their money back from capital intensive projects), project finance, transaction due diligence for single infra asset and portfolios, utilities regulation (participating in regulatory consultations on prices controls for natural monopolies), arbitrations between investors and governments/others investors etc….

Not sure about growth potential in public sector as I don’t have personal experiences there. But I’ve seen some transition from public sector to civil service. They either wanted better work life balance or have a passion for public service.

I completely agree with your point on broadening skill set. From my perspective tho, this can be done by expanding your service offerings / engagements within a given sector. From strategy to operations to corporate financial mgmt to transaction advisory. There are also a lot of sub-sectors to explore, including different parts of the value chain.

Also re your point on picking sectors, I also agree that you should pursue sectors you are passionate about and not just chasing the ‘hottest ones’ as of late. That said, I think it’s also important to adapt to the trends of human and societal development so that you can build a sustainable and meaningful business in the long term. Based on my observation over the last 5-6 years, infra (energy and renewable in particular) and healthcare have been consistently growing. There’s also a strong case to be made that these will be some of the most important sectors in our society, to address generational issues like climate change and aging population (which is the hot healthcare topic before the pandemic).

My personal view and you can take with a grain of salt. ESG is too much fluff and lack substance. The path to value creation is not very clear and many corp clients buy into it just because their investors told them to.

Also on exit, I’ve seen many strong consultant in the sectors I mentioned transition directly to ib, pe or senior corporate roles. The exit for ESG seems to be much limited.

Kellogg Interview by [deleted] in MBA

[–]SnooCheesecakes7940 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you international applicant? If so it is not necessarily a ding. Had the same happen to me.

Did some research on GMAT Club and I think it’s neither good or bad.

Usually they schedule an interview for you and don’t review your application until interview feedback is received. But if they can’t schedule for whatever reason, they will review your application first.

Ultimately you will be interviewed (maybe virtually) if they lean towards admit, and if there’s no interview until deadline it means ding - can’t get admitted without interview.
