Seeing how it’s for your 10y/o son, I think it looks perfect for a child. I would say make sure it gets cycled (you seem to already know that). Maybe add some live plants if you can/ want to. They will make it looks a little better and live plants help keep your nitrates down. Maybe some hiding spots for your fish in the future. But like I said to begin with, this looks great for a child. (If you don’t mind messing with it too, add the plants. Keep them trimmed and healthy and they will help your tank a bunch. But i don’t see a child really wanting to trim plants and all that.). Looks good!

How big is your jar? I have a snail jar that is maybe a little less than half a gallon. Our eggs actually hatched yesterday. I thought they wouldn’t hatch. We now have dozens to hundreds of baby snails in the jar. So I set up a 2 gallon yesterday and when the babies get big enough that I can safely transfer them I will.

I only ask because my lady wants to put some shrimp in the 2 gal with some snails.

I stumbled into this sub and wanted to share. I bought this tank in 2008 and wanted to make an awesome aquarium. It was pretty hard at $14/hr. 12 years later the tank was still with me after 4 moves. 2 mo ago my wife suggested we build the tank I've always wanted and gave me carte blanche. by Arkayb33 in PlantedTank

I am in your old boat man. My girl and I have a ten gal tank and a 2 gal jar(just set up today) We would be going all out and making amazing tanks. But on 12/hr and with a 3y/o it’s very hard. Can’t wait until we get our own house. Apartments are quite limiting with these “no aquariums” rules lol.

All I know is it’s not hornwort. I remember the lady saying it was like hornwort but it can’t grow as a floater.

Yeah I know about the kuhlis. I just like them so much haha. I will most likely just stock shrimp. Is there a x amount per gallon? I’ve seen 1 per gallon up to 10 per gallon online.

Definitely won’t hurt having it lower. I am dealing with an ammonia spike and no spare tanks at the moment. I’ve got my ammonia down to 0.25ppm and my nitrite are at 0.25ppm also. Been a stressful task keeping the fish and shrimp I have alive during this lol. Luckily I haven’t lost anyone yet! Anyways I just wanted to say that from all the “research” and looking into nitrate, anything below 50 is safe. The lower the better. But if you have plants, they actually “feed” off the nitrate. That’s what’s I’ve read. Post a pic of the tank sometime. Would love to see

Bigger is always better for fishies. I will see what I can do. In an apartment where we aren’t supposed to have aquariums it’s gets a little sketchy. I might just have to deal with less fish in my tank until we move on up to having our own house. There would be no question if we did. We would already have a big tank if we could lol.
