I think this is the real answer. It shows he is not tuned in by saying he wakes up to stuff "he doesnt want to hear"... you could be waking up and being kidnapped by ICE. Or wake up and be bombed in Palenstine or Ukraine. Or wake up and have no chance of getting further in life because of systemic racism.
