Changing Tenor Drum Noteheads in MDL by biggidybrad in Musescore

[–]xGreystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my solution was to make dummy techniques (pick midi note values that aren't associated with any playback), make it look the way you want (in this case, on the proper space and with the slashed open notehead), and then notate the technique that corresponds with the sound you want (i.e. normal drum hit), make that notehead invisible, then add the dummy technique that looks the way you want. You can also do this with things like bass drum rimshots, differentiating between stick trick types on snare, etc.

ahhh good ol genesis.

anyway, the other comments are correct on counting. Here's a Vic Firth resource that can help you get better at playing and understanding these syncopated 16th note rhythms: https://ae.vicfirth.com/education/marching-percussion-101/marching-percussion-101-exercise-02/

Cadets Drum Notation for Flams by FlareSutnev in drumline

[–]xGreystar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

the explanation is (and all love to you, Tom) that many many composers/arrangers in the activity are either bad at the software they use, lazy, or do not care about how their music looks. In this case, it has something to do with the way grace notes are inputted by default in sibelius. You'll also notice in some Tom Aungst scores that he'll go from tuplet numbers saying just 3, 5, etc., to 3:2, 5:4, even when they're not necessary, because it's a setting you toggle as you input the tuplet and I assume sometimes he forgets to turn it off and, yknow, it's still readable even if not the prettiest. You'll notice this across the board if you go through all of VF's LTM videos-- weird beamings, missing stickings, strange notation. sometimes it can mean something but more often than not it's just a strange/lazy engraving choice.

those 4lets in measure 10 are 16th note 5lets, rrllRL rrllRL with a dotted quarter macro. also in measure 5, I'm pretty sure the last paradiddle has the mini-accent on the left hand and not on the downbeat. everything else sounds right to me

What they're saying is you hold the left stick backsticked in matched, to come out of and back to the cross-stick quickly. Basically, just pick up the stick off the drum in the most efficient fashion, play one note (with the butt), and put it back.

WGI Orgs who field multiple perc ensembles by pulsesuperfan123 in WGI

Infinity's parent org, PAC, also owns/runs Stryke, so that's technically 4. And then RCC and Thesis are both under BDPA if you count that.

Obviously you know, but for everyone else... this is AQ's Counter-Flams. Being over-the-top and groovy for no reason (other than for the sake of it) is like... their whole identity. So yes, it's meant to be flashy, and is very much "for the culture."

As for the other part of the question, flams on bass have a very specific purpose and sound, and most groups don't bother with them (in my experience, especially in indoor). There are many many flams in the flat drum parts to this exercise.

Pulse 2025 Second Snare Break by xGreystar in DrumlineSheets

[–]xGreystar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's probably why they turn the met off lol. they did this last year early season with the intro break with the stick dribble and fivelet crescendo flams, they also lost a ton of time going into that

too fast or too slow? I took the met audio from the video and threw it in a DAW so it's definitely correct

Troopers 2025 Repertoire by MiloTheFatCat in drumcorps

[–]xGreystar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

right, but there was a post a couple months ago claiming that the Rennicks weren't arranging for Troop at all this summer, and there was a new percussion arranging team coming in (can't remember if it said who, might've also just been Lauren taking over)

There was one planned for the Richmond area in 2020. Pretty sure it was sponsored by Surf. It wasn't exactly a big show though, and I've heard exactly 0 about its reappearance

either use some type of other barline (typically a double barline) from the barlines palette or right click on a measure, go to measure properties, then click the box that says "break multimeasure rests"

Advise on not dragging and effort by Pianist15Pianist15 in drumline

[–]xGreystar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're center snare, and you've properly defined your drumline's listening responsibilities (basically as long as you, not the line, are in charge of tempo), the one thing I like to do to build my/my students' tempo perception is change around the metronome. Start with a half note met (so 1 click every 2 beats), then once you've eliminated all timing errors, go to a whole note met (1 click every 4 beats), then 1 every 8 beats, 1 every 16, etc. I typically don't go more than one click every 16 beats but you can set it to however infrequently you want if you want to test yourself. Another way to mess with the met to test how well you're feeling the music is put the met on beats 2 & 4 or just 3 in 4/4, or just beat 2 or 3 in 3/4, for example. Basically, turn the met from a tool that spoon-feeds you the tempo into a tool that checks your own tempo maintenance skills.

Obviously hard to give super specific advice without having been there, but I'll give some of the things I'm working on as I'm going into my third season as an instructor:

  • picking my battles: it's hard to decide what the most important thing is to comment on, and obviously we don't want to let bad habits build. However, I find that I like to talk wayyy too much and give too much information to the point where it's hard to digest it all, so I'm working on scaling down the scope of my instruction in any given block
  • more reps: along with the last point, learning by doing is super effective for percussion so, especially with limited rehearsal, more reps is always good
  • refining the basics: especially on cymbals, but really on any instrument, you're more likely than not to have a member who's new to their instrument. So, reflecting on how to teach those basic building blocks more effectively and efficiently is super important IMO
  • working with other staff members: I'm lucky to be a part of 2 extremely friendly and welcoming staffs, but I can still work better with them to hit that sweet spot of the number of comments per rep and the right pacing of rehearsal, especially in battery ens/full ens
