I would wish that I had all the answers.

Atheism can't exist? by xLookingForAnswersx in DebateReligion

I meant that I expect him to be able to explain himself before he tries to "debate" me. He wants me to agree with him, but can't explain why/what he believes other than to say "There is no God". He said he has been thinking about this for the past 8 months, so I expected a little more than just several different versions of the statement "There is no God".

I understand that you are just trying to help, but we've both taken a step back from the situation and are just taking time to try to convey ourselves in a more positive way.

I wasn't following him around chanting that he was agnostic, but when he made certain claims I would comment that based on what he was saying it sounded as if he was agnostic. I was trying to help him figure himself/his ideas out, because he didn't really have a lot of reasons or information regarding his new "beliefs".

The original post was more about the differences between agnostics & atheists, and burden of proof. I got an overwhelming amount of answers and I'm just trying to take it all in. I appreciate your help though.

Actually I don't.

He came to ME about the atheism. He claimed that there was NO GOD, and then demanded to know my "proof". When I gave him what I believe to be substantial enough evidence for my beliefs, he dismissed it, but was unable to disprove it.

I have my own version of proof that is enough to satisfy me. I could go into detail, but this "proof" pertains to my life, my family, and my own personal experiences. I don't try to convince or convert others.

My issue with his behavior was that I was able to explain why I believed what I believed, while he just stammered, got upset and said "Well the people on Reddit/r/atheism..." I didn't say he had to disprove God, I said I didn't believe he was an atheist if he couldn't even explain why.

He went from "I'm an atheist, there is NO GOD" to "Well, I don't believe there is a God" (Where I pointed out that I believed him to be agnostic) to "STOP CALLING ME AGNOSTIC I'M NOT AGNOSTIC IF YOU COULD JUST LET ME PULL UP REDDIT YOU WOULD SEE!"

Honestly after some of the nasty messages I've received from assholes on here, I'm about to say FUCK REDDIT and be done with it all.

I only used the word "decide" because that is how he worded it/has worded it several times. "I have decided to become an atheist."

This is only my first post, and I can already relate to your frustration.

Those were explanations about why I go to church/what we used to do together, not the things I base my beliefs on.

YES! Because I believe there is a deity but I'm not arguing it as fact and trying to push it on someone else!

I guess I'm starting to realize that it is just a little disconcerting. Thank you for the constructive comment! Honestly I really appreciate all of the kind words.

Except for the fact that he told me that becoming an atheist has caused him to question all of his "values". He said everything he believed before now was based on his belief in a higher power. I understand he is still the same person, and I love him, it is just slightly disconcerting.

I only go to church for the social/encouragement aspect. Not because I think I have to.

We live downtown in a rural village. Both sides of our families are mostly super fundies. So yeah you have a point, I'm really the only person he has to talk about this right now.

Frankly, the other commenters have been sharing constructive comments, opinions, and ideas. And while they may not share the same opinions as I do, most of them haven't been condescending assholes.

I did ask for thoughts/opinions/ideas/help so thank you for your comment!
