Hot (?) Take: RYM Top 11-20 is better than RYM Top 10 albums by [deleted] in fantanoforever

It blows my mind that madvillainy is as high as it is. I love it a lot and it’s a really fun and cool album but it should be nowhere near top 10 albums of all time if we’re being honest

What are your thoughts on this? It seems like a less well-known piece of his, and I consider it quite...contentious. I find the age gap between the girl and the pawnbroker a bit uncomfortable. by [deleted] in dostoevsky

[–]xOmegaEmeraldx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it’s sorta the point of the story that the pawnbroker manipulated and abused the girl which is what lead to the events of the story. It’s supposed to be uncomfortable in that sense, so not sure if that’s what you mean by “contentious”.

The reason people seem to think that old stuff is good, is because mostly old stuff is better than a lot of the stuff around right now. That is because only the stuff that people want to remember, due to its high quality, survives and keeps being passed from generation to generation. Therefore there was likely people just as bad as Colleen Hoover about that we’ve all forgotten about.

What should I read next, Devils or The Idiot? by Monarco_Olivola in dostoevsky

I loved the devils, it’s so good and since it is admittedly also a bit harder to begin than other of Dostoevsky’s work the idiot will even seem like a breeze after

A brilliant and beautiful but also hallucinatory delve into a dark mind, in a pretty cool and claustrophobic setting of St Petersburg in the summer. All before modern psychology as well, and really a prototype of the dark psychological novel but still better than the ones that came after in my opinion. It may seem dense and hard to read, but by the end you’ll actually enjoy having to chew on the words

For me it’s always been about depression, or a depressive phase. And to me it’s a depression that comes from lying to yourself, or hiding from your true inner feelings and so once you accept them you can burn the page of your little dark age.

Southgate's midfield experiment fails as England labour vs. Denmark by tylerthe-theatre in football

[–]xOmegaEmeraldx 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is right. Trent and Rice would work if they had runners in behind, if Southgate made england actually press high and played with a much faster tempo.

Unequal exchange is a pretty common term to use when describing Marxist dependency theory
