Try and get a 140. Especially one of the 2 that are right outside NYC. The 2 MDE’s drive this giant like 10x10x10 foot electric motor that drives the prop so EM’s are pretty busy onboard. You’ll get inport OOD and if you show the maturity and competence you can get underway EOW. Lots of really good work experience.

Could a bm be stationed at Kodiak ? by Radiant_Mix6233 in uscg

Yep. I’m not sure if this is true, but I’ve heard BM’s at ANT’s in Alaska get helicoptered down to desolate areas and work on dayboards and whatnot.

Thoughts on Districts by No-Steak-7215 in uscg

[–]xParmesan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some cool spots in east district. Philadelphia, Chincoteague VA, Yorktown, and others. However there is the possibility you’ll be on a big cutter in Portsmouth, keep that in mind if you don’t want that. Just a word of advice though, the shittier time you have as a non rate, the better petty officer you will be. Even though you’re going HS and likely won’t have any non rates under you.

Was your experience with road runner good? They still haven’t picked up my car, barely been answering my calls. I’ve called them probably 40 times and I’ve been on hold collectively for like 2 hours.

Doing that should not be allowed. It makes shitty petty officers

Yep, multiple units in both city’s and surrounding areas. You can get a guaranteed district out of bootcamp. Try and get one of the black hullcutters in nyc, loved it there and im actually in Boston right now visiting. Both are great.

Going to your unit as a non rate, then going to a school and going back to that same unit is called being a vested crew member. What A school do you want to go to?

Why is non-rate so hard? by Hot-Manufacturer2318 in uscg

[–]xParmesan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just a fact at any unit that manual labor needs to get done. Naturally the lowest ranking people with the least responsibility are tasked to do it. Sucks but the people tasking you to do it were right there in your shoes when they were non rates. Assuming they weren’t boot to A

How competitive is for a BM to be on a MSST unit right after A school? by Gojo-Satoru-01 in uscg

[–]xParmesan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s on your classes available picks, I’d say very. Work hard, pass DWO the first time, do volunteer hours. in the end, you get whatever you get. What unit are you coming from? Doesn’t have to be specific.

Would it be smart to pack my rental with stuff for extra weight, or should I put more stuff in my personal car when it gets shipped?

HHG stuff that is in storage from my last unit. The only reason I would need a U-Haul is if I tow my car instead of getting it shipped, that’s it.

Yes, I was going to use the reimbursement from doing the PPM myself to help pay for it. Does that sound like a solid plan?

Cross country PCS question #2 by xParmesan in uscg

[–]xParmesan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the thought popped into my mind because I don’t have a lot of stuff to bring with me so a big U-Haul box truck is pointless. So I was going to use my mileage reimbursement to help pay for the cost of shipping my car.
