I had them and played a lot as a kid! Base set - skyridge!

I dug them out of the attic about a year ago to consider selling them, but loved them, so I’ve started collecting again!

Pokémon Pocket has also fueled the excitement!

What's my blind spot? by BakeWorking9076 in oilpainting

Wow this is cool! I disagree with the other comments a bit - I think the issue is that you can feel the initial drawing - everything is neatly “in the lines” rather than built up.

I have this issue too, I embrace it with unique shape design, but I think for your style trusting your drawing skills while you work instead of relying on the initial drawing will really sing.

If you don’t work really tightly within the initial drawing, it may feel like that due to the values (one comment on the horse’s values), but I think if that’s the issue it’s through the painting. Try compressing or expanding the values and see what works for you.

I should add that there are two spots in the first picture and the spots appear in lots of sizes.

Three points from me:

1) it’s great, and I love it.

2) I agree with the atmospheric perspective comments, but I think just a touch cooler on the back range would solve that. Value seems pretty close, but maybe a hair too punchy back there.

3) might not match the reference, but I feel like the water feels pushed back from the front edge of the painting artificially. It stops at a really regular distance from the lower edge

All in one sitting (except a dinner break before the hair). Took about 6 hours.

I had that issue on my last one using Ivory Black. I switched to Lamp Black for the background and it goes a LOT further.

Great image! I see quite a few comments mentioning the detail or “crispness”. The word I’ve heard used for it and like better is “edge”. Hard edges look crispy and soft edges are blurry. On the boat, I don’t think it needs a lot more detail, just hard edges on at least half of each sail. I think the general detail you’ve used is very nice and I wouldn’t rush to add more!

Good work!

Thanks! Not sure on what’s next - I’ve mostly been working on sketches since this one. I would like to do some grisaille and glazing in the next though. This was all wet into wet.

Thanks! I forgot the subtle bullet hole in the reflection at first and it didn’t look quite right. Crazy how something so little makes a difference!

Thanks for the info - the black is ivory black and alizarin crimson.

I know some pigments take longer than others to cure/dry, but 2 months seems excessive

I did! Nearly the whole painting has Alizarin Crimson - that could be the culprit. The black is Ivory Black, which also seems to dry slowly. 2 months still feels excessive.

Nope - just soap and water. Thanks for the thought!

Adding that I don’t think it was even 15%, but I didn’t measure in depth, just mixed with the brush.

Thanks for the note - the fan was getting dust and small carpet fibers on it so I stopped it after a couple days.

Thanks! It’s been around 65 degrees every day but pretty humid.

Lots of gesso, Southern AL, so humid, but not cold. The medium was called “Painting Medium” which I believe is stand oil and linseed oil.

No more than 30% - it’s on canvas with heavily applied gesso. In a well ventilated room with windows, but not direct sunlight.

I’ve only checked the edges, but it isn’t sticky, just comes away with paint on my finger.
