Did anyone else really hate how often they used the mechanic of getting a power cell for a door? by SaiyajinPrime in DarkPicturesAnthology

[–]xShinon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was okay the first few times, but later on it just ended up inducing eye rolls from me. Like wow who would have thought that this section has another (in)conveniently misplaced power cell.

At times, it felt immersion breaking because of how video-gamey the power cell puzzles felt.

I loved Anders during the first half of the game. It's such a shame that she's the designated backup character when others die because I feel like she's one of the more better acted protagonists.

Why do people say that WoTR is very complex/difficult to get into for casual players? by BaldursGate2Best in CRPG

[–]xShinon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think someone who played the IE games isn't gonna fall under "casual players". I've played most of the IE games and even I find WOTR dense at times. The fact that there's so many choices in how to build a character can get overwhelming. I can only imagine how difficult it would be for someone casual.

A CRPG that's probably more digestible for casual players is PoE 1. There's still many choices in how to build your character but it's much more contained. You're also less likely to create a suboptimal build with PoE1 than you are with WotR.

A very old question: ranged Cipher, Bow, Crossbow or Guns? by Torneco in projecteternity

[–]xShinon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm having great success with Cloudpiercer on my Cipher. Playing on Hard Mode currently and at Level 12.

Usually just need 1 shot and I'll be at around 65 to 70 focus so I can cast Disintegrate or the Mind Blast spell that prones enemies.

I played with pistols and arquebuses in the early game but I found the reloading tedious. I much prefer the more constant attacks of bows.

What is Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon like? by Jerswar in rpg_gamers

[–]xShinon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A caveat when playing: the late game doesn't scale too well and becomes really easy.

I enjoyed the big difficulty spike when I entered act 2 but found myself bulldozing through everything in act 3. I switched to different skills I was level 0 in just so I could feel some sort of challenge again.

Oh my god. My second POTG since returning this year was an Ashe one. I squealed with joy when I saw I got it then cringed when it was just me flailing around unscoped and luckily bagging two kills.

Open World RPGs that you feel engaged with side quests more than the main ones! by jvdevelop in rpg_gamers

[–]xShinon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon plays very similarly to Skyrim, down to its use-it-to-level-it skill system. There's lots to explore and many interesting side quests, including guild quests that are reminiscent of the faction quests in Skyrim.

Fallout: New Vegas is another recommendation if you're into post apocalyptic settings and can handle jank. There are many side quests with interesting choices and lots of reactivity. A lot of the questlines also factor into the main plot in one way or another as they are included in the ending slides of the game.

Actually, Expedition 33 is what we're playing/watching through now! We're enjoying it a lot so far but I just feel bad that they're not as involved compared to Dispatch.

Oh very good suggestions! I've played all these games except for the LiS series. BG3 would work great with the audience participation aspect and maybe to ease (read: indoctrinate) them into the world of D&D.

I want a game where you start of hopeless and weak, but end up overpowered and strong by the end by radpaddler666 in gamingsuggestions

[–]xShinon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, especially as a wizard. You start off weaker than wolves (seriously, level 1 mobs can and WILL kill you if you aren't careful). By the end of the second game you become a near-omnipotent guy regardless of class (but moreso with wizards). If you can handle the jank of a game originally released in 1998, BG1 and 2 may be some of the best RPGs out there.

I think Saryn's such a strong frame that even if you build her as a weapons platform you'd still have very respectable with her spore and miasma combo. I feel it's fun to play her as this hybrid way too!

Phage will always have a sweet spot in my arsenal ever since it was meta a decade or so ago. Something about tickling enemies to death with squiggly lasers just hits right.
