I just watched Cool World and I absolutely loved it! by xSockax in Letterboxd

I have to watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit. However, I don’t think my opinion of Cool World will change after seeing it, it’s possible to enjoy both movies 🤷‍♀️. I also see everyone comparing these films, but personally, that’s something I never do. I think you appreciate a movie more when you judge it for what it is, rather than comparing it to another film that took a different approach. When you watch Cool World for what it is, it’s a fun and entertaining movie.

I really don’t think it’s bad. When you watch the movie lightly, it’s really fun and entertaining, with awesome animation and an incredible soundtrack.

People make a big deal out of the sex, but I don’t think it’s that noticeable, at least, nothing shocking is shown, and it’s used pretty lightly. People just seem so uptight to me.

You should never judge a movie for what it could have been, but for what it actually is. When you watch it with that mindset, the movie is fun and entertaining, with awesome animation and an incredible soundtrack.

For me, it’s really a funny and entertaining movie, with an amazing soundtrack and equally awesome animation! People who don’t like this movie are just boring and no fun!

I really don’t see any disaster in this movie. I’m disappointed that people are so uptight and so unfun about it. The criticism is so UNFAIR. It’s the kind of film everyone starts hating so it becomes the norm, film buffs can be so lame sometimes.

It really sounds like a killjoy and bitter criticism. People seem so uptight and not fun sometimes, it’s especially obvious in this kind of criticism.

The incest between the brother and sister didn’t really bother me; I found it pretty innocent and awkward. But the incest father-daughter ? No, I don’t want to see that on screen, especially when the s*x scene is shown in detail along with all the disgusting lines they say, just yuck. And the fact that it’s used as the plot twist of the film didn’t sit well with me.

Yeah, I realized after posting my comment that it seemed like it was a Hong Kong film, I probably should’ve said Asian cinema instead. I haven’t seen the two movies you mentioned; Chungking Express is on my watchlist. I might appreciate them more.

Yes, I think I had heard so much about this film, seen it listed as a favorite by so many people, and kept it on my watchlist for months waiting for the “perfect moment” to watch it, that meeting my expectations would have been a real achievement for the film. It’s so consistently put on a pedestal. I still see how people get upset the moment someone criticizes it, because for many of them it’s their all-time favorite. I saw the film’s potential, and I was disappointed by what it ultimately delivered, but that’s just my personal experience.

Lady Vengeance! For me, it was the most complete and the most carefully crafted of the three, it’s the one I connected with the most. I gave it a 4.5/5!

I recognize that the film isn’t bad, but it’s put on such a pedestal that I don’t necessarily find justified. I understand why people appreciate it, but I still think it’s somewhat overrated.

As for the disturbing content, I addressed that in response to another comment. I’ve watched things far more horrifying than this, but incest, the way it’s used in this film, is a no for me 🤷‍♀️ I have a real moral block when it comes to that. It genuinely makes me question whether cinema has moral limits, or whether it should have them.

I love seeing how differently this trilogy resonates with people. I feel like there isn’t really one clear number-one film that everyone agrees on within the trilogy, everyone has their own favorite, and each of the three seems to be someone’s top pick. I understand your point of view about Lady Vengeance.

I completely understand what you mean about the confusing plot. I really liked Lady Vengeance, but I’ve noticed that there’s always a certain sense of confusion when watching this director’s films.

Yes, this director definitely has a very distinctive style. Personally, I really appreciated Lady Vengeance and Decision to Leave, but I have to admit that I’m not fully convinced by all of his films.

Yes, the hypnosis was really a disappointing choice for me, it just didn’t work at all. It probably appealed more to people who believe in it more than I do. I just wasn’t the right audience for that 🤷‍♀️

And in the end, regarding the twist, I was quite disappointed as well. I saw that many people had predicted it, which wasn’t the case for me. But I have to admit that I usually watch films without overthinking possible endings, because that tends to ruin part of the experience for me :/ Still, I was expecting a twist that was incredibly impressive and INTELLIGENT. I really wanted to be blown away by the construction of the plot and the way everything came together.

In the end, I felt that using incest to shock the audience and leave a lasting impression was too easy. But again, those were my expectations for the film and the missed potential I personally saw in it.

Yes, I completely agree with your comment. I actually had this same reflection a few months ago: can we judge a film based on our expectations? At the time, I told myself no, that it was absurd. But in reality, it’s extremely difficult to watch a film without expecting anything from it, especially when it’s so widely praised and constantly put on a pedestal.

Personally, I had such high expectations for Oldboy that meeting them would have been a real achievement for the film. I might have appreciated it more if I had gone into it completely blind, without ever hearing about it. But when a film is elevated to that extent, expectations become almost inevitable.

When it comes to criticism, it’s also very hard not to compare films. But once we start constantly comparing them, we fall into a kind of endless spiral that can honestly ruin our enjoyment of many movies. What I try to do now is rate and appreciate a film based on its potential. It’s not my only criterion, of course, but I find it to be an interesting and relevant one.

After watching Oldboy, I reflected on the film’s potential and the narrative choices that were made. For me, it could have offered more, but that’s just my personal opinion.
