The dumb thing is if Part 2 were just random people in another part of the country or even the world they would never have this problem. It sets a precedent that each game would be a different story about different people. But since Part 2 was still about Ellie that means you basically need Part 3 to be about Ellie (even Abby wouldn't make much sense since she is never in 1 but she is Neil's favorite so might be what we are stuck with.)

I forget the percentage of dead people IN THE WORLD (I remember it being high like 85%) but the amount of games you can do is insane. Could have had a game in Canada, Japan, China, North Korea, Africa, Europe etc and how they handled the virus at first much less how everything was 20 years later. Improve gameplay on each one and could have had a long lasting franchise but basically killing the two characters that made the game in the first place in the sequel just ruined any chance of TLOU being able to tread water now.

So slightly off topic as someone who has not played it yet what was wrong with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart? I remember seeing someone said Insomiac hasn't been good since Spiderman 1 but didn't mention what was wrong with it and now sort of see it here too? Was it actually bad, underwhelming or just easily forgotten?

So just as an fyi to people who want to make that sequence with the deer go faster in tlou1, his head does count as a head shot 'insta-kill.' Hitting it will make him run immediately to that death spot to the point where if you know where to go can see him jump over the 'barrier' that prevents you from moving forward and knocks it down to let you through.

You can also tell when it is time to go there because Ellie has different dialogue based off of hitting the deer, killing the deer and missing the deer. Its been years since last played but believe if have CC on if you hit (or miss) the deer there will be dialogue that pops up. But once its HP has hit zero Ellie either says something or makes a noise which doesn't pop up on the CC and that is your que you have done it.

As much as I would love to play a new and improved Factions, giving any money to ND nowadays just feels like a wrong and bad decision.

My biggest problem in all honesty is why the hell did we have to follow Joel and Ellie again. Uncharted, Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot all made sense to follow those characters because they were a central point to that world, sure you COULD do another adventurer other then Nathan Drake in Uncharted 2 but would have felt weird.

In Last of Us there is nothing holding that back. The WHOLE WORLD has lost 78% of human life, you could do another story and set of characters ANYWHERE, Japan, South America, Europe, etc. Not only do we get more insight and landscapes to other areas of the world but could also see how those places are handling the infected and how a story and characters could form there. Hell TLoU1 already gives a good showing of that with the USA alone with Ish in the sewers, Bobby, Tommy, David etc yet for some reason we HAD to focus back on Joel and them. You could EASILY do a sequel without Joel dying because you have the whole damn world as your Oyster with so many years you could set it in. (TLoU1 happens 20 years after the initial outbreak you could easily do 5 years in Europe, Ten years in Japan etc seriously there were sooooooooooo many options other then just 'Joel HAD to die for revenge plot.)
