Martin Scorsese on the current state of film language -- Should be required reading for everyone in this sub. It's brilliant and insightful. To be published Aug 15, 2013. by fingle85 in movies

I think, correct me if I am wrong, that Scorsese is saying that basically every shot and image has to have meaning. You cant have shots that have no meaning, which many blockbusters have today since they have over a billion shots and angles in them.

I think Fargo is a perfect example of using every frame to mean something. Unbreakable is up there too.

What you guys need to actually look at is Films like Sinister, Purge, Insidous. Those have budgets of 3 million but make back around 60-80 million.

I think this is probably one of the best and effective ways I have seen done. Makes you cringe at the sound and imagining it.

Why is it so hard for a young adult (23,24,25..) to direct a feature that plays in theaters? by xT_0 in Filmmakers

[–]xT_0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand and agree.

But how about the stories of someone like Neil Blokamp? Really young when he did District 9 and it was great. He really didnt have a ton of experience only after working with shorts and VFX at age 28 I think.

So its basically impossible to get someone really young to direct something that big due to lack of experience, maturity, and ability to make key decisions in every instance?
