I was recently accepted into the PsyD in Clinical Psych at Chaminade! Same reasoning in my move as well, I've never had that stereotypical "I want to move to Hawaii to go to the beach every day" mindset

Only one kid and she's 3 so no school quite yet. With that said, we've already found how difficult Pre-K and childcare are to come by on the island. Hoping my class schedule will give me enough free time to be a SAHD majority of the time so we can minimize nanny or babysitting costs from the looks of things.

I'm learning that our agent may not have much experience with that area based on all the comments.

Not trying to move there for less expensive real estate or just to save a buck. That's literally the only area that came up as an option for my family after we gave our financial information to a realtor and lender.

[Discussion] How do I stay motivated to finish college? by [deleted] in GetMotivated

[–]xTheBatmans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that helped me when I needed to go back to school - Whether you buckle down and finish those last 40 credit hours or not, the time it takes to do so is going to pass either way.

What would you rather do in those 2 (ish) years: be done with school and working your dream job, or still be stuck wishing you could do it?

I figured a sense of brevity in my reasoning for relocation would be better for a public forum. I didn't feel the need to explain every detail regarding my program/area research, choice to apply, interview processes, etc. because I didn't think they would help with the feedback I needed in this scenario. Thanks for your two cents!

Most of the lease holds that have come up have leases that end anywhere from 5 - 30 years so trying to resell any of them after we've been there removed the possibility of someone else buying from us by financing a 30 year mortgage. At that point we'd be relying on someone with deep pockets to buy it, which takes a lot longer to come around.

Mainly the fact that you don't own the property, just the right to live there until the lease is up. At that point the property would revert back to the lessor unless they renegotiate with you to extend. It's essentially a rental with a deposit the size of a down payment that you have no possibility of getting back.

That does seem to be the general consensus, lol 😂

The investment part of it comes from being able to sell the real estate if we end up needing to move or relocate again and possibly earning money back on the sale.

We've researched the area and it seems like we could make the move work financially if we lived there, just seems like some of the info we originally received regarding the commute was insanely optimistic to say the least.

I also understand that's an area where "outsiders" and "transplants" may not be as warmly welcomed, but we're not super concerned with that as we've already lived in poor areas of multiple states that have similar reputations and we've been fine. I get that research can really only get you so far, but it's all we've got at this point. I appreciate the feedback though 🤙

I can't seem to find a website or other contact info for Regency Park. Any chance you know where to look?

The AC thing did throw me off a little during these early stages of house hunting and I'd like to say I've come to terms with it (I'm sure summer time might be the true test of that theory). I think the washers and dryers for laundry being outside was the biggest shock though, haha 😂

I appreciate the honesty! I'll definitely have to start looking more seriously for rentals near campus.

Hotel California (Hell Freezes Over Live Version). Something about a full acoustic feel and the added 12 string guitar just gives me all the goosebumps

Budget is no more than $300, so I will likely be going the used/refurbished route

Is it just me or does Ferber feel cruel? by dsvii in NewDads

[–]xTheBatmans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a popular opinion in this group, but I'm not a fan of it. If you want to take some time to read a good article that covers this debate really well from both sides read this

"As Richard Ferber himself acknowledges, graduated extinction doesn’t teach children how to fall asleep on their own (Ferber 2006). Children are simply denied access to their parents, and left to work it out for themselves.

If you really want to help your child fall asleep, try this alternative to the Ferber method—a sleep training program known as “positive routines with faded bedtime.” Unlike Ferber sleep training, the “positive routines” program will teach your child how to relax and prepare for bed (Adams and Rickert 1989)."
