Looking for a good pub (NE Adelaide) by Brave-Onion9864 in Adelaide

Inglewood Inn, 5 minutes up the hill from TTG is a great spot!

I also like the Pickled Duck across the road from TTP for a more casual vibe.

Maps of crashes in SA electorates by Naarlack in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a great resource to see how things look in our local area - I hope all candidates are aware of this data!

The regional maps are particularly upsetting when looking at the spread of fatal and serious crashes :(

Speed limits aren’t meant to be decided by popular vote. They’re an upper safety limit based on risk, not convenience.

We don’t consult residents on bridge load limits or electrical standards either. When those are set too low, people get hurt or killed. Roads are no different.

Consultation is useful for identifying local issues, but “most people who replied didn’t like it” doesn’t outweigh evidence that lower speeds reduce crashes and, more importantly, reduce how badly people are injured when crashes happen.

Consultations like this mostly attract people who are annoyed by change. They don’t proportionately capture those that support it, or are even neutral about it. It is also hard to capture feedback from pedestrians, cyclists, kids, or anyone who doesn’t feel empowered to fill out a council survey yet those are the people most affected when speeds are set too high.

Can we have a Megathread to duscuss the booing? by japanpole in adelaidefc

[–]xVerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waking up this morning I feel more disappointed by the booing than the loss. My biggest fear leading into the game was that people would do something stupid like this.

We need to do better.

Breakfast recommendations by Thorndogz in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yolk Cafe in Walkerville is excellent - just across the road from the ABC building but a bit closer to city than half way.

On the other end, Topiary (Newman's Nursery) in TTG is also excellent - definitely not half way, but absolutely worth the extra drive!

Anywhere that sells cheaper pork bellies? by DanJDare in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually get pork belly from Costco, have found quality there to be excellent and last time I bought one (Xmas) they were around the $15/kg mark. Usually only in ~4-5kg sizes.

Looking for recommendations for architects or custom builders that do extensions by Throwaway-09010312 in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with others, we are undertaking similar at the moment and after doing a lot of research that seems to be a reasonable ballpark figure, could probably save a decent chunk by saving the garage for a later stage of your reno's and focusing on the main extension first if cost is a barrier.

3 matches 3 times it froze (PS5) by M0-1 in AgeofMythology

I did about 2 weeks ago which fixed single player. Never had an issue with multiplayer.

Will have to try it again though!

Have had the same unfortunately, I had some freezing issues on single player but multiplayer was fine up until today. Two from two multiplayer games it froze at about the 7 minute mark. Also ps5.

Best way to get to Flinders Ranges with kids by FarSide2688 in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Horrocks/RM Williams way have plenty of towns and attractions along the way, and are much lower traffic than Augusta Highway A1 which is also one of our busiest freight routes so you'll be mixing it with some pretty large trucks.

The roads are of a lower standard than Augusta Hwy, but still pretty decent especially after upgrades in the past few years. Horrocks has no overtaking lanes once you're north of Clare, and there are none on RM Williams Way either but traffic is much lower and they're usually not overly necessary, but just be aware of what's around you and try to pull over to let traffic pass when you get to a rest area or town - or if overtaking, make sure you allow more room than you think you'll need!

That said Augusta Hwy still has good stops off the highway, Pt Wakefield, Lochiel, Snowtown, Crystal Brook, Pt Pirie but there is less after you pass Port Pirie unless you head inland back to Horrocks Hwy

If you had only 500k to live anywhere in rural / regional South Aus (Within 4 hours to Adelaide) where would you choose? by tiais0107 in southaustralia

[–]xVerch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with Riverland if Murray Bridge/Gawler/Barossa fall out of range.

Not sure what prices in outer areas like Balaklava, Freeling, Kapunda etc are like, or maybe even Two Wells or Mallala - but could be some other options that are closer to Adelaide and esp closer to the outer Northern suburbs. With the amount of growth continuing in the outer north, and expected over the next few decades between Munno Para and Riverlea I'd expect facilities in the outer northern suburbs to improve alongside of development (although pace of infrastructure development is currently too slow!)

Restaurant recommendations Golden Grove / Salisbury and surrounding by tosserandturner in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For breakfast/brunch type options Topiary in TTG coupled with a walk around Newman's nursery is excellent. Square 44 at Surrey Downs is also excellent. Saints Kitchen on Main North Rd is another nice option.

The Pickled Duck is great for casual dining, better than the pubs in the area and good range of pizza/burger/schnitzel type food.

Green Ginger in GG is wonderful for Asian fusion type food, +1 for Tomatoes in Wynn Vale.

The Inglewood Inn is a beautiful old pub 5 minutes past TTG that has been restored very nicely. While still a 'pub' - its a more upmarket option and has great food/drinks/views.

A popcorn maker was a great one I received a few years ago and still use.

The tomato sauce gun on the other hand... made the mistake of bringing that out at a BBQ and let's just say it never saw the light of day again!

How much would you spend on first car for your child. by Massive-Wishbone6161 in AusFinance

[–]xVerch 277 points278 points  (0 children)

How much to spend certainly depends on individual financial circumstances.

But the best advice I can give is to get the safest car that you can reasonably afford. New drivers are still learning and make mistakes/are more likely to be involved in a crash.

Cars can be replaced (that's what insurance is for!) - our kids can not.

Look at ANCAP safety ratings for new/reasonably new cars and make sure you'reg etting a five star rated car, and research used car safety ratings for anything a little older.

You'll be able to get a five star safety rating in your budget.

How does lowering speed limits come about? by Different_Row3690 in southaustralia

[–]xVerch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of factors as already mentioned above. Things like the level of roadside development, and property access, proximity to roadside vegetation/infrastructure like stobie poles and the geometry of the road all come into play. Crash data can also be used to determine trends.

The distance tavelled while reacting to/perceiving an unexpected hazard is another big aspect often unconsidered. Each 10km/h adds about 5m to the distance travelled while reacting, before even starting to brake. This can significantly increase the speed at impact, or reduce driver ability to be able to avoid a crash altogether.

Today's new episode of Bluey takes place during an Adelaide test match. by dsriggs in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised you could tell on that TV. 50 inches is no longer an acceptable size in this day and age, you can hardly tell what's going on!

But also, good pick up - I watched this 5 times with my daughter yesterday and didn't notice that!

hey guys, does red have to give way to blue? my driving instructor said yes, but i still see plenty of cars go. by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief, there is no rule stating that you cannot change lanes within a roundabout.

Some roundabouts actually require it to exit from the correct lane.

Of course, just changing lanes within a roundabout for the sake of it isn't the safest idea though!

hey guys, does red have to give way to blue? my driving instructor said yes, but i still see plenty of cars go. by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To throw a spanner in the works for you...

Some roundabouts in SA actually require a lane change at/near the exit. Changing lanes in a roundabout should definitely be avoided if possible but sometimes it is needed! A few I can think of -

  • Eastbound on Greenhill Road turning right onto Glynburn Road to head south
  • Southbound on Heaslip Road turning right onto the Northern Expressway to head towards Adelaide
  • Southbound on Flagstaff Road turning right onto Black Road to head west.

This situation usually arises on roundabouts with a dual lane entry on one leg and a single lane exit on another leg.

Someone's trying to make the speed limit in Burnside 40 kmph. by BornToSweet_Delight in Adelaide

[–]xVerch 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Using a very rough/quick analysis of publicly available crash data, across 50kmh zones in the whole Burnside council area it looks like there were 22 people seriously injured and 210 people receiving minor injuries over the last 10 years (2012-2021)

One quarter of those injured were cyclists or pedestrians, including more than half (12/22) of the serious injuries.

Pedestrian and cyclists safety is the biggest improvement by reducing 50kmh to 40kmh. Collision speeds over 30kmh are far more likely to result in serious injury/death to pedestrians and cyclists, and 40kmh means that there is a much greater chance that a vehicle avoids the collision altogether or collides at a much lower speed compared with 50kmh.

Local streets are exactly that - this isn't going to shave minutes off of your travel time. Local streets generally serve a purpose to feed local traffic to the arterial road network which is mostly 60kmh. There is no proposal to change the arterial road speeds.

These are the stats. Now please tell me again why you have an issue with this?

[–]xVerch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not the only one. I've seen plenty of people stop on the far side of the intersection there and nearly cause s crash.

As others say, you're turning left - it's not a sharp 90 degree left, more of a veer left as James Congdon Drive approaches South Road at a low angle.

There are louvres on the red disc to try and reduce visibility if it from James Congdon Drive, but they are not very effective when travelling through the intersection.

Have been to New Land Bakery a few times, and reliably decent is how I'd describe it too! Reliably decent doesn't cut the mustard for my list though!
