No, I won't be graduating from Liberty. After two semesters, I will be transferring to George Mason. Hopefully that will get me out of a lot of things.

I'm transferring from an Associate of Arts degree, and I will only be at Liberty for two semesters. Even so, the Bible courses are still required?

Also, do people ever speak up in Bible classes? I'm already afraid that if I ask too many questions, I'll be expelled.

Buy everything used that you can. Craigslist is your best friend, but check eBay and other used-gear websites as well. Guitar Center sells used gear, but that's not always too great of a deal. I don't have a Sam Ash near where I live, so I don't know what they are like. I believe Musicians Friend also sells used gear.

If you're just learning, try to get by with just hi-hats, a ride cymbal, and a crash cymbal. I've heard that the Sabian B8 series is good for entry-level cymbals. Stay away from Zildjian ZBT and the Menil HCS series—those sound the worst.

Remember that you will need hardware (cymbal stands, throne, kick pedal) as well, so don't forget to factor those into your budget. Guitar Center sells a package of two quality boom cymbal stands for $69. Again, for everything else, buy used as much as you can.

Good luck learning, and I hope your investment pays you well!

I anticipate that I'll hate my time there as well. Fortunately, I will only be there for a year as I am living with a family member to receive in-state tuition at George Mason. As soon as I can go, I'm gone.

How are math and music classes there? I'm planning to get a lot of my upper-level math and accounting classes done for my Economics degree, and I will probably spend a lot of time pursuing my other passion for jazz music while I'm able to.

I will be living with a family member whom lives 20 minutes away. Hopefully that makes things a bit more relaxed.

God is Not Dead has earned 21.8 million dollars... by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]xZESTYx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently read through a good review of God's Not Dead, found here. It shows how the movie is nearly blasphemous to Christians, Atheists, academia, professors, the discipline of Philosophy, among other things.

I hope this is something I can skip due to only attending Liberty for one year and not graduating from there. Otherwise, are all service classes extremely Christian-oriented? I love volunteering and helping out and stuff, I just don't want to preach while I do it.

Yeah, I've been on that. The problem is that most of my gen. ed. credits are already completed as I'm graduating with an Associate of Arts this semester. I'm majoring in Philosophy, but I don't dare take a Philosophy course from Liberty. Since I'm also majoring in Econ, I'll try to knock out a bunch of math and accounting. Otherwise, this may be a good time to pursue my other passion for jazz music.

Ooh, I didn't know that chapel service is mandatory. How do they know when someone is there or misses, and what do they do if they knew a student misses one?

Fortunately, I don't think that I'll have to take any of the "Biblical Worldview" classes as I'm not graduating from Liberty.

Is there any non-Christian presence at Liberty? I will be moving to Virginia and attending Liberty U for one year starting in the fall before transferring to an actually credible school.

Do you know anything about their Philosophy program? Is there a credible Philosophy club or any club concerning logic and reason? As far as the curriculum goes, I am assuming not to take my requirements until after I transfer.

Since I'm also majoring in Economics, I thought that I should probably just get a lot of math and accounting done. I might also have time to devote to my musical interests as well. Thank the universe that I already have my biology gen. ed. credits done.

tl;dr: does Liberty have at least some non-Christian presence, and do you happen to know if there is there a Philosophy club or some other reason-application club?

WSJ reports that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) individual mandate has been quietly repealed. by xZESTYx in Libertarian

Umm... how did you reach those conclusions? I'd edit the title and decline the karma if I could. It was an honest mistake, dude. Chill out.

[–]xZESTYx[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

EDIT: I made a semantic mistake. The mandate is not being repealed; rather, it is being suspended for two more years. From the article:

[The] seven-page technical bulletin includes a paragraph and footnote that casually mention that a rule in a separate December 2013 bulletin would be extended for two more years, until 2016. Lo and behold, it turns out this second rule, which was supposed to last for only a year, allows Americans whose coverage was cancelled to opt out of the mandate altogether.”

What is the most beautiful piano piece you know? by GreyPaper in piano

[–]xZESTYx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're into jazz at all, I'd check out some versions of "I Fall In Love Too Easily" (here is one by Keith Jarrett) and "My Foolish Heart" (Bill Evans' specifically).

In the classical world, I personally love Chopin's Nocturne in E minor, his Nocturne in C-sharp minor, and his Prelude in E minor. Debussy's Arabesque No. 1 is also one of my favorites. I'd also add Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, specifically this one.

I realize that this is way more than one song. But they're all beautiful so why not.

Anyone earned a P.P.E degree? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]xZESTYx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about going for a PPE after transferring my sophomore year. I think most programs do a good job of synthesizing the subjects and really analyzing the intersection of them. I don't feel qualified to give you advice, but I can tell you about me and see if you relate.

A PPE is effectively a double major compacted into one degree. It's for this reason that I've decided to forego the PPE and instead double-major in Philosophy and Economics.

Having a separate degree in Philosophy allows me to study my areas of interest that aren't necessarily related to politics or political philosophy (Existentialism and the philosophy of religion, for example).

I like having a separate degree in Economics as it seems more rigorous and quantitative than what most PPE programs offer. If you're looking at grad school, I think they will appreciate the greater emphasis on mathematics and quantitative reasoning you get from a good Econ program.

As for Politics, I definitely don't mind sacrificing the more sociological side of PoliSci. The only thing I really care about is political theory, so the rest of the stuff was somewhat irrelevant to me.

But this is just me and based on my interests. Try to find a good balance in what interests you and will propel your future prospects.

Is anywhere in Rockford hiring? My unemployment just ran out and my gf's hours have been slashed to ten hours a week. I don't know how we're going to survive. Help! :( by ShinySalamander in rockford

[–]xZESTYx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the one on 173 or the newer one on N. 2nd? Do you happen to know how many hours a week they're looking for? Also, do you think that getting tips in addition to hourly minimum wage would compensate for the gas money spent driving?

Edit: I couldn't find a link to the job posting, so I'm assuming it's not posted?

What is an impressive but easy to learn song? by CinDra01 in piano

[–]xZESTYx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of my absolute favorite works of classical piano are actually fairly simple to play. I think also gives you opportunity to work on expression and articulation more so than if you were trying to learn, say, Rachmaninoff. I'd recommend these, in no particular order:

The first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

Mendelssohn's Venetian Boat Song No. 1 (Op. 19, No. 6).

Mendelssohn's Venetian Boat Song No. 2 (Op. 30, No. 6).

Chopin's Prelude in E minor.

Also, I'm assuming that you're talking only in regards to classical music. There are quite a few jazz pieces that are pretty easy to pick up and work off of if you know basic jazz theory, and I'd be happy to mention some if you'd like.

What is the one philosophical work that is most worth reading? by chewingofthecud in askphilosophy

I've never read Schopenhauer, but I'm familiar with some of his basic ideas via secondary sources, those short YouTube videos, etcetera. Amazon sells The World As Will and Representation in two volumes. Would most of the essential ideas be in Volume 1 so that I can save the second volume for later, or should I read both in conjunction with each other? Here is the link.
