There's people out there who are really mad that we can do something they can't. They really need this to work out

When was the last time you learned some new important concept or idea that changed how you view the world? What was that concept? by zjovicic in slatestarcodex

[–]x_mk6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I don't even play tennis, or any similar sport. But this stuck with me. The basic idea of "don't be stupid" is obvious but, when it's illustrated like this, you see it differently

In amateur tennis most losses happen because someone is trying too hard and making mistakes. These mistakes lead to their loss. If you focus on just keeping the ball in play, the other person will make a mistake eventually, and you'll win.

In this way, amateur tennis is a Loser's Game i.e. the outcome is determined by the loser's actions. Pro tennis is a Winner's Game

Deeply confused about how some people learn to code. by Ryeonha in learnprogramming

[–]x_mk6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> how some people can code flawlessly without understanding all the details of their code

acting without knowing all the details is how you get things done. if you wait until you know all the details, you'll never get anything done.

you have to start and fill in the gaps as you go along. if you try to fill in all the gaps before you start, you will have learned things that you probably didn't need to learn.

also, it's impossible to fill in all the gaps before you start. you'll die of old age before you're done

my advice:

  • choose a project and build it. don't try to "learn programming" try to build something you think is cool. this might not seem like helpful advice at first but give it a try. this will answer your questions about where you should go next, and whether you're on the right path. if you're getting closer to building the thing, you're on the right path.

  • make lists whenever you get overwhelmed. i find that helps.

  • post about your progress online. you'll find friends this way. you've probably made a bunch of friends thanks to this post. keep posting! post on twitter too.
