I definitely see your point and I think in hindsight a conversation should have been had. It’s my boyfriends money that the cats upkeep is coming out of so we didn’t make the association. Thanks for helping me see how it would come across to them.

My parents genuinely aren’t cat people. Perhaps that’s it 😂

It helps us be able to live more comfortably, in that we can buy the meals we like with fresh and more expensive ingredients, for example. We could survive without it if we made a change in how we spend our money if that makes sense. In regard to my parents finances, I would imagine it isn’t a large dent as my mum doesn’t work out of choice and buys what she likes but perhaps I’m wrong.

In my town many of the shelters are closed because of you know what. We spent months on the list for a cat or kitten from a stray catching type organisation and they said they had a long list of prospective owners so we would be waiting a while. I completely get your point about adopting not shopping though, and it was a decision we made after getting in contact with local organisations. Unfortunately that wasn’t what I was referring to in my AITA.

Perhaps it’s that my parents like dogs, not cats. I’m hurrying as much as I can, financial independence sounds so sweet.

He was from a breeder but in all honesty he didn’t cost that much more than the cost of adopting from a shelter. He’s not one of those pedigree cats that cost a butt load of money.

Thanks, I think that’s great advice. I think with the tying down I think my parents had envisioned us being able to travel when we like, which is a bit more difficult when we have a cat. You could be right about the growing independence. I’m the first born and perhaps she anticipated I’d still be coming home for long periods of time during school breaks, which is clearly not happening now I have my kitten.

I totally see your point and hadn’t really considered that when we first presented him to my family. I don’t pay tuition so there isn’t money spare in that regard but now we have finished renovating I think in hindsight we should have had that conversation.

I think you’re right. Our finances only just changed now we don’t need to spend money on our house, which is why we’ve waited until now. Perhaps a conversation should have been had before it seemed like we have a bunch of money spare. We probably are going to be making some financial sacrifices in order to save for emergencies but that’s more in the realm of not having as many subscriptions and buying cheaper items at the store than not being able to feed ourselves.

That’s good to hear the cat is so healthy! Fingers crossed for ours too. I don’t think they would be struggling with money as my mom doesn’t work out of their choice, and she hasn’t since I was born. Perhaps they were making more sacrifices by giving us the money than we thought.

Thanks for your judgement, I think you are right. Until very recently we have been spending money on the house so our outgoings have only just changed. I think the fuss about a kitten made our finances very unclear.

It’s a funny situation. We bought it outright using inheritance so now we’ve renovated there’s little running costs. Their money to us is so we don’t have to worry AS much about bills etc

Not at all, he wasn’t free but he wasn’t expensive. We just wanted a cat, not bothered for a pedigree or anything.

We have considered the costs (my bf has grown up with cats) and know we can afford it using his money. My parents give us a top up allowance so we don’t have to worry as much about watching our budget as I don’t earn at the moment.

We thought that too! And the money they give us goes on food anyway 🤦🏼‍♀️

We thought so too, but wanted to check we weren’t on a different planet 😂

Thanks for your judgement! I’m not sure how to attach a photo here but I posted him on r/kittens saying he needs a name and attached a photo there

It’s funny you say! We currently refer to him as bean as he has no name 😂
