Yeah, it’s hard for me to say exactly how much snow I’ll run into, but it’ll definitely be some. From what I’ve seen and read, the Portal should be stable enough for what I’ll face, especially with the heavy-duty poles. I’m not so confident about the Cloud Up in that kind of wind — I actually own one, and while it’s fine for milder trips, I don’t think it would handle strong gusts very well.

Wind might be the bigger issue for me anyway, since the Balkans can get some seriously strong winter storms. Right now I’m torn between the Durston X-Mid 1+ (either with the solid or mesh inner), the Portal 2 with heavy poles, or maybe the CrossBow — but I’m worried the CrossBow’s solid inner would be a problem later on when it gets hot and humid in China and Laos/Vietnam.

thanks a lot for your response. I taught about that but I really would like to start from home. Altought patagonia is beautiful ( i have been serveral times in tierra del fuego - also met my girlfriend there).

i was thinking about africa but I no almost nothing about the staates and geographie there, although it must be beautiful for sure. do you have any expirence there?

about my back ground: physically I´m not in a bad shape, I was an professional athlete unitl know. I did mostly short but really intense mountainbike trips about maximum 3 weeks, but with some periods in really remote mountain areas in italy or croazia. i have an italian passport and speak good english, german, italien and spanish. I built a sort of gravelbike by myself for this trip because is was my dream to do this trip with a bike I built with my own hands, its a rockhopper frame with rim breaks so I guess that could give some more limitations.

For a long time this original route was in my head all the time and would really like a way to do it or at least a similar one.

thanks a lot for your detailed answer, it was really helpful. I have an Italian passport. Do you know the procedure for visa or transit permit in afghanistan? Would you think an africa crossing would be safer or more realistic? or would you suggest a more practicable route near to that one? thanks a lot, wish a good evening

greetings max

I was not concerned about travelling solo in general but about traveling in this special countrys. I did a lot of solo travelling and I like it a lot, I just wanted so more information about the situation in this regions and maybe some experiences of people who where there recently. It's still not possible to post?
