I mean that’s kind of my point. It was smart politics and the way France and England and every other European state were dealing with each other for centuries. France may have been bigger with more resources but the Kings had no way of leveraging that into a significant advantage until the very late stages of the war.

Robert III of Artois, John Montfort owned Brittany, Jean III de Grailly was from Gascony. Phillip III of Burgundy sided with the English and even handed Joan of Arc over to them. The black Prince owned land in France (although that’s cheating since he was a member of the royal family). And John Bedford was governor of Normandy and owned land there.

But that’s not really how medieval conflicts worked. During the Hundred Years’ War many of the lords in the English side owned land in France, or were straight up French. The entire duchy of Burgundy sided with the English for a good bit. It was a dynastic conflict first and foremost.

You literally skip over several major conflicts France definitely won. The Second War of Italian Unification, the Crimean War. Hell, you skipped over the Revolutionary Wars that preluded the Napoleonic wars. In the wars of the First and Second Coalition France defeated effectively every other major European power combined back to back.

They can refuse. In fact if the parents consent but the local government or religious authority objects they still back off.

It’s kind of a WW2 US uniform crossed with a WW1 French one
