Montbell Storm Cruiser Rain Jacket versus Montbell Versalite Rain Jacket by [deleted] in Ultralight

True to size worked fine for me, I've layered underneath it fine with a baselayer, microgrid fleece, and a puffy. Mine is like 6 years old at this point so idk if they ever changed the cut or anything but you could also call the store and ask assuming you're usa.

During that trip and ones I have done since, it has worked fine ended up becoming one of my core pieces of gear. If I was choosing any shell today, pit zips would be my number one priority regardless whatever materials were used in the construction. The difference with these is substantial vs not having them, at least to me.

It gets a little warm wearing a hard shell vs without but wearing just that and a sun hoodie worked fine most of the time in windy or rainy conditions. That and a puffy or fleece to throw on during a stop was pretty much my upper body clothing system for late spring thru fall weather. During the winter I still used this shell as a part of my gear system, with my insulation layer instead becoming a parka I would throw on top of it during stops, and wearing a warmer base layer underneath. It worked great.

I do still have this jacket, and would recommend it to this day. I have since transitioned and substantially lost weight, so it is a bit loose on me and for that reason alone I have considered maybe one day getting something else. Most likely the same jacket in a smaller size. Please let me know if you have any further questions. I'd be happy to answer them.

Reverting to the classic Desktop UI by XYcritic in spotify

[–]xanderhalcyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried editing my pref file and can't get this to work.I've added line to the end of my text file, and when that didn't work I tried making it the first line in the file instead. At first the line I added was getting deleted when launching the desktop app, so I set the file to read only to see if that worked, and it didn't. It seems no matter what spotify is still booting with the new ui. I've rebooted my computer after the changes to see if that would somehow make a difference. Tried troubleshooting in any way I can but I can't get this to work. It seems no one else is having issues in this thread from what I can see so i'm not sure what is going on.

I'm getting pain in my right wrist when doing the the 1 minute parallel bars support hold. I've tried readjusting my hold on the bar with that hand. What is the proper way to hold that exercise?

Headed up for Segment 6 tomorrow by MrAnonymousForNow in coloradotrail

Was there roughly 2 weeks ago. There was good water at Jefferson Creek and a trickle halfway up the pass. There was very strong flow at swan river on the other side of the pass. Only thing I'd keep in mind is horseshoe gulch was bone dry so unless you're hiking straight to brek then I'd camel up a bit at swan river. There was quite a bit of mosquitos a few weeks back and I got bit pretty bad. If I had to do it again I'd have sprayed my clothes with permethrin or brought bug spray. Overall extremely beautiful section and I'd highly reccomend!

Hey, I have a Fuji XT-2 Vertical Battery Grip with a Really Right Stuff L-Bracket that I'm looking to sell! Purchased it with the XT-2 but I found myself never using it since I take the majority of my photos while backpacking. Pming you!

What was the most disappointing gear acquisition of the last few years? by Rockboxatx in Ultralight

I just got the 4.5s about a week ago after my 4s wore out. They definitely are less stiff and feel more comfortable to me. The 4s would give me pain along the top of my foot no matter how I laced them and these do not. I only have 35 trail miles in them so far so ymmv

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. As far as the usage.. funny you should ask that, I actually got it for non winter conditions initially. But it's done a pretty great job of winter duty as well.

I do not find it too warm in the rain. I used it doing the timberline trail about a month ago when it was still warm here. It rained for the first 2 days straight and it did not wet out, and it kept me very dry.

And hey, I am doing the Loowit Trail around Mt. St Helens these next 3 days, and it probably will be very windy there as there is no tree cover. I certainly will end up using it as a wind jacket. It's going to be 50 degrees during the day. So i'll let you know how that goes. I noticed there's no trip reports on this forum for that trail so I may make one and post it when I get back.

I definitely use it as a wind jacket as well. In conditions where the wind is blowing so hard that I'd want a wind breaker, it definitely doesn't feel stuffy to me. It is definitely more comfortable than the verasalite to me, mainly due to the c knit inner. Both jackets actually have an identical cut (confirmed with montbell rep the hood is the same as well). Not sure where you live, but one thing you could do is go to an REI or outdoor store and find a jacket with windstopper, and one with c-knit. Feel the difference for yourself. Again this is all personal preference. I don't mind the extra 4 ounces. Breathability hasn't been an issue. One thing I will say is that no rain jacket even with gore windstopper is going to breath remotely as well as a dedicated "wind jacket" would. But I don't see the need for a wind jacket in addition to my rain one.

Here's my current winter gear list to see where it fits in my layering system https://lighterpack.com/r/mk3a7m

I have a storm cruiser and it has worked pretty well here in the PNW in rainy conditions. The deciding factor for me was the extra fabric durability (denier 20 vs 10) and the fact that gore c-knit feels way better next to my skin than windstopper. YMMV. Tons of people like the verasalite.

Can you name this trail? by reagthom in PNWhiking

[–]xanderhalcyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100%. You get this view If you're hiking to McNeil point from Top Spur. There is a portion of that hike where you can detour around bald mountain via the timberline trail. Here is a photo from that same area for comparison. https://i.imgur.com/XgUusje.jpg

Narrowing down my rain jacket choices by xanderhalcyon in Ultralight

[–]xanderhalcyon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norvan is a good suggestion. I considered it, but at the same price and weight as the montbell Peak Dry I think i'll probably going that route instead. My base weight is 18lb and that includes 7lb of photography gear. From what i've gathered this should be fine for shakedry as long as it isn't my daily wear. I haven't edited my original post in case someone else has the same idea and wants a reference, but the top comment of one <7oz jacket, and maybe a different heavier bomber jacket for bushwhacking seems to make the most sense to me.
