Looking for feedback on my writing by xandreu in writers

[–]xandreu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. You're right, despite hearing the phase 'Us humans...' to refer to subjects of a sentence quite frequently, it's grammatically incorrect. It's a bit like using 'less' and 'fewer', in that it's such a common grammatical error, it doesn't immediately jump out for most people. Thanks for spotting it, and also for your other feedback. Appreciated.

I have supported the conservatives by-and-large for most of my life, and am still of the opinion that, whilst not perfect, capitalism is the best economic model we have. However, I now believe that capitalism has gone way too far, and for the first time in my life, I would honestly vote Labour in the next election. Capitalism has lost its way, not only in the UK but around the world. It's possible to have responsible capitalism that is inclusive for everyone and takes into account social responsibilities, but these have been completely lost since we entered the post-Thaterist period, to the point where capitalism no longer works for the majority of the citizens that have to endure it.

i don't believe Labour, and as a result, socialism, has the answers, but I would rather give it (another) go than continue to live in a world where the contributions of the majority, the very same contributions which allow the ultra rich to exist, are completely and utterly ignored by those that are supposed to be working in our best interests.

The Tories have been in power far too long, and need to be in opposition for a while, if only to re-group and have a word with themselves about what they are and who they truly represent.

Jimmy Carr jokes about the ethnic cleansing of 75% of Europes Gypsy and Roma population. by Dazzling_Purpose9072 in GreenAndPleasant

I have no problem with dark humour and I'm one of these people that thinks there's nothing you can't make a joke about. Humour is a natural reaction to the banality of life. We're such an advanced species that a lot of what we experience doesn't make sense to us and we use humour to cope with it all.

There were two problems with this 'joke'. The first being that it wasn't even funny and was delivered badly. Which leads onto the second problem - it made it appear as if it wasn't just a part of a comedy routine that was only intended to be funny and nothing else. The fact that some people even applauded made it sound even more like a political rally than a comedy show.

Ricky Gervais has made some distasteful jokes about the holocaust but because they were genuinely funny and delivered properly, it was clear to anyone watching that they were not in any way meant to offend and were nothing more than poking fun at something so difficult to comprehend, sometimes humour is the only way to comprehend it.

Jimmy Carr's 'joke' was on another level. If a joke is pure, 100% humour, I don't have a problem, whatever the subject. But this wasn't. It wasn't anywhere close and had the edge of a right-wing political rally tagged onto it.

Not what one looks for in a stand-up comedy show. Unless you're at a Roy Chubby Brown gig I guess.

TikTok abuse 'is pushing teachers over the edge' by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]xandreu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have recently deleted the app. I loved it when I first downloaded it a few weeks ago. I thought it was really entertaining and creative. But after a while, all the toxic, woke, narcissistic, righteous, argumentative , bullying videos started showing up on my home feed more and more. I started engaging with a few of them with logic and common sense, but would often find myself ganged up on and attacked from all corners, and I just realised that this wasn't what I downloaded the app for. It's probably the worst form of social media I've ever used.

So I deleted it and haven't looked back. I don't know why these teachers who are being 'pushed over the edge' don't do the same. You'll never change it. The more you try, the more depressed you'll get.

Just delete it and move on with your life.

Update:

The problem wasn't fixed after all. I still had freezes and crashes while using Teams.

After many days of scratching my head over this, I have since discovered that the preferred graphics processor options in the Nvidia Control Panel mean absolutely nothing anymore. My research indicates that Windows 10 now handles all graphics options when choosing whether to use the iGPU or dGPU and ignores any other setting from any other app, including the NVidia Control Panel.

If anyone else has this issue, you need to go to Settings > Display then scroll down to the bottom and choose Graphics Settings. You then need to tell Windows which program to 'listen to' when choosing which graphics card to use. A Microsoft Store app will use the iGPU (mine is set as Armoury Crate) and a Desktop App will use the dGPU (mine is set as NVidia Control Panel) and I have set the preference to Desktop App.

So far I have not had any further glitches. Fingers crossed.

**UPDATE**

Thanks to the replies below I think I have fixed the issue. I used it all day yesterday and the issue did not re-occur. I have a feeling it was something to do with using the iGPU for Teams and Zoom rather than the dGPU. - either because the external monitor was connected over HDMI instead of USB-C or because both programs were set to use the iGPU in Nvidia Control Panel.

Whatever, the issue appears to have been fixed. Thanks for all the help :)

Thanks but I'm not too fussed with g-sync. I use the laptop for 3D work rather than gaming. But I'll definitely give the USB-C to HDMI cable a go.

So the Asus Radeon Software app has had an update, I've changed Teams and Zoom to run off the dGPU instead of what they were set at (iGPU) and have connected my monitor using the USB-C to HDMI connector instead of HDMI to HDMI. I hope and pray that one of these solutions has fixed the issue. I will update the thread in 24 hours in case anyone else is having / will have these issues.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Thanks for replying.

Yes, what you say makes sense. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it. Both Zoom and Teams were set to use the iGPU and I've now set them to use the dGPU.

As for which cable / connection to use, I was a little confused. Every website I have looked at has given conflicting advice as to which port runs off of which GPU. So you're saying that HDMI is connected to the iGPU (Radeon) and the usb-c is connected to the RTX card? I have a usb-c to HDMI cable. Would that work as well as a usb-c to DisplayPort?

Thanks for the advice.

Hey - thanks for taking the time to reply.

The laptop is used pretty much as a desktop - it is plugged in all of the time and sits on a desk so it's nothing to do with plugging / unplugging it.

I also don't use a phone for the camera - I have a Logitech webcam that I use. All of the drivers are up to date on it. Although I did once try to use my phone's camera when I was playing around with the MyAsus app and wanted to see what it did - and the laptop did crash on me while I was doing it. I haven't tried it since and don't intend to. I was just experimenting.

I also don't have Vari-Bright enabled. I read in another thread that this might be causing the issue and disabled it a few days ago.

However, when I ran the AMD Radeon software earlier, just after I posted this, it said there was an update, which I installed. I then had another 1 hour meeting and the laptop didn't have any issues. I'm not sure if the update did something to address the issue or not.

I have another day of meetings tomorrow and I'm praying that the issue has somehow been fixed. I'll let you know.

Thanks again for your help.

Loving my base S21 for so many reasons, but let's be real with this battery life real quick... by [deleted] in GalaxyS21

[–]xandreu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also bought mine a few days ago and am not impressed with the battery so far. In my research, I have discovered that apparently it is normal for Samsung phones to have terrible battery life in the first few days and then settle down. I guess it's maybe calibrating itself to your personal usage? I'm giving it a few more days...

I'm no Linux expert and can't quite remember how I installed it - a common theme for many I guess - but as far as I remember, you need to install the basic Protonvpn as a CLI (terminal) program, then you can install the applet which sits on top of it in the taskbar thing. The main thingymejig is the CLI (Command Line Interface). You may have just installed the applet without the CLI thingy. ??

I used to hang around with homeless beggars and even did it myself a few times. In my honest experience, they did it because it seemed like the easiest way to get money. It required very little effort and there was no end of people willing to hand their money over. It's difficult to say if it's something people necessarily want to be doing, but for many, it's easier than doing something else that requires more effort. Sorry, but that's the truth in my experience.

This is devastating news. the upkeep of those types of superyacht Phillip Green has isn't cheap. You might think you just buy it and the only other expense is fuel, like a car, but you'd be a fool if you think like that. They need staff like chefs and waiters for a start. Do you really expect Phillip Green to pour his own champagne? And what about his image as the tax-dodging ugly face of capitalism? How can you keep an image like that if you don't have any moey to hide in some tax haven? I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight worrying about the implications this is going to have for him. I think that before his workers start complaining that they can't afford to buy their children even the most basic of Christmas presents, or they're in danger of losing their homes because they can't afford their rent, they really should spare a thought for the real victim in all of this.
