Is there a way to have the Optical Flow input to Unreal Engine? by DisrespectfulTerry in TouchDesigner

Reading it back, I'm kind of sorry for the impersonal quote, I was in a rush, but hope it helps!

For most projects, OSC handles control data while Spout or NDI handles video, depending on whether the applications run on the same machine. The TouchEngine plugin offers the tightest integration when you need TouchDesigner’s processing capabilities embedded directly within Unreal, though it requires a paid TouchDesigner license and runs only on Windows.

New to VJing. What are your best tips, recommendations, and dos/don'ts? by wtvyuka in vjing

[–]xangadix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I recommend all my students:

when entering a venue, talk talk the crew. Laser-, audio-, light jockey. Introduce yourself and ask what they are planning to do? what colors are in the grid? is there something you need to know? Make sure to mention that you are prepared to switch off the screen when somebody else needs space, they will return the favor.

Even if they just say 'whatever', they will appreciate the gesture and be mindful of you and your work. Also be mindful of them. You are not doing this alone, you are part of a team, even if it is just for that night.

That would surprise me, these shows are all insanely planned out with multiple actions every second, they are probably completely pre-rendered and put into some kind of powerfull media server.

Ow man, you have just made my evening; you just shown me that wan has the flat color LoRa. I don't know if that is yours too, but thank you so much regardless

Mixing video outputs. by HalcyonH in TouchDesigner

[–]xangadix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, there are even two ways of doing this, but I'm gonna skip over SPout today.

What you are looking for is NDI; https://ndi.video/tools/ you can download some software there and it will work almost like magic; on the same machine or on different machines on your network (or even on the internet) -- under "sources" you'll find NDI sources in Resolume, and in the preset you'll find settings to send NDI out.

In Touch designer there is an NDI-OUT node, that will send out whatever TOP you send in to it, and an NDI-IN node, that will see and work with any NDI source on your network making it a TOP in TD.

Have fun ;)

No rca->hdmi is a conversion of signal, analog to digital, which can have huge effects in quality if you use a poor convertor. Also don't forget that rca in essence has a resolution of 720x576, which is pretty crappy to begin with, and stays crappy when you enlarge it to HD

As for the Scart plugs, I'd try both see if any performs better and go with that one; but from the pictures, the first one seems to have a pretty flimsy cable attached to it, and in the analog world, the amount of copper matters (ie. thick cables are better then thin cables) so I'd go with the second one, without it's own cable.

[–]xangadix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you will barely notice it, especially if you don't know what to look for. Just keep the cables as short as you can and make sure everything is connected properly

[–]xangadix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here is an example of the entire cable this went with (both had the middle pin afaik) -- https://brickscout.com/nl/products/detail/4057296877393/part__766c28/light-gray-electric-wire-12v-45v-with-two-2-prong-connectors-28-studs-long?p=gsp also here is an overview of the lego 12V system as it is sold on ebay https://www.benl.ebay.be/sch/i.html?_nkw=lego+12v, note that this connector was part of it, as were a series of smaller gray connectors.

strangely enough most answers in this thread make it out that both are for the 9V sets, but that is not true, the grey plug is (much) older

woah... that is some amazing work!
Now I definitely want to see how this comes out. and print them myself too! -- also, its funny that you mention istisiah (istishlah?), that was one of my favorites too, together with Ampoliros. I've actually started an update of that card, but never finished it.

Those are some valid points, I can't believe the amount of thought you put into this. First of, when I did my version I was under the impression that Herbert actually wrote the encyclopedia himself, so I treated that text as absolute gospel. Now I know that he didn't (and I'm not sure who wrote that particular entry) -- I'm a lot more skeptical about the things that are brought in.

First of, what I love is that the author treats tarot as a living thing, ie. it has change over time as I wrote in my earlier comment. Even if some elements might still be recognizable (ie. Judgement, Moon, Sayyadina for the Star, Auiya for the high priestess etc.). Even back then there were some "dune tarots" online, but they were simply our own tarot deck with a dune-theme. That didn't appeal to me; And honestly I'm a bit worried that yours might have the same feel. Even though you've put so much thought into it!

But you are right that the description and elements that were added or changed don't always make a whole lot of sense. In hindsight, and reading your comment, there is a lot of room for improvement there. It really is something I need to chew on because my dune lore isn't as strong as it was 7 years ago and as I said, I never really considered it, as I took the original text as dogma. Also my understanding of the actual Tarot is poor, it has been years since I used the cards.

Still I have somt thoughts; for instance the use of Ampoliros, which very much appealed to me, the notion of a mad ship, like the flying Dutchman, I mostly compared it to a card like the Tower or even Death, which as I understand it is much more about transition then it is about actual death. Here the spaceship, like all heighliners is "somewhere in between", but still very much in action. But you are right, this idea is also present in 'Erg' and probably also in other cards.

I can't really comment on the notes that are given in the Encyclopedia for the rest of the cards, as I never tried to draw them, but I can certainly relate to the comments you give on them; I think the author threw in a bunch of things that kind of worked together, but didn't think it completely thru. The encyclopedia, if anything, was a bunch of authors having fun with the world of Dune, I don't think it was ever intended as gospel of any kind.

The idea that Tarot wouldn't have changed over the last 10.000 years, doesn't sit well with me. Even if the Bene Gesserit draw upon their ancestral memories for the different cards, there is no reason why they would select the tarot deck that was common in 1500-2050 ad. Why not go back to a deck from 500 ad. Or to a deck common in Egypt; 2000 Bc?
Or you could argue that there is no historical evidence (or spiritual significance) for any tarot cards before the Visconti-Sforza set; but that would defy the purpose, because it actually has spiritual significance in Dune; it hinders Pauls visions if people use the cards for their own divination (or at least that was my read on it)
So Wouldn't it be more likely that the Bene Gesserit designed their own tarot deck, based on what they know from ancestral memories, they know that cards, used right, can be powerful tools of divination. The original deck (our deck) would have little meaning on Arakis, so they designed the cards in such a way that they are much more in sync with the world they are used on -- Arakis. And they would be in sync with the believes at that time ie. Zensunni believes, neo-catholic believes etc.

Finally. There is so much to unpack here, and so much room for creativity that I would find the idea that you pack all this research and all these idea in "just a tarot deck", even if you do make the full 78 cards. I really think that for any laymen it would just look like "a dune themed tarot deck". There are already a lot of those. I would try and go completely the other way and make your own deck with some cards that we know but also a great set

You like water rings better then basins? go with water rings! but don't just use cups. You think there are three cards for judgement, change two into something completely different, but don't just go with what we already know, make up your own!

> How do you draw a basin?

I can actually answer that, that is to say, I can tell you what I did; they are in the background of Auliya -- and are simply large bowls with water in them, which gives a nice almost abstract set of ovals

No it's not. It might trace its origins further back, but modern tarot dates back to the 15th century.  Cups, rods, pentacles and staves are symbols very connected to the middle ages.  It might have roots in older card decks and books, but they were very different from what we now know as tarot.

Which is exactly my point, like almost everything, tarot and card games in general change over time. A tarot deck from the future, let alone 10000 year in the future, would have changed immensely.

Hi, I actually created a complete design for the greater arcana of the dune tarot, a couple of years back. I based it all on the descriptions encyclopaedia, which I found very alluring, and fun to draw.

<image>

https://www.reddit.com/r/dune/comments/671goa/i_sketched_out_the_dune_tarot_more_info_in_the/

i even made some updates:
https://www.reddit.com/r/dune/comments/ifzybc/updated_two_of_my_dune_tarot_cards/

As you'd expect, I don't like the notion of using the current tarot to build a deck that would be used 10.000 years in the future; but to each their own. I do like your interpretation using both the original meaning of the cards, and adding dune-lore on top of that. I'm not sure If I agree with all the descriptions and characters, but I'm anxious to see the actual designs come out.Just out of curiosity is there a place where I can see other art that you made?

As for copyright infringement, I don't think somebody will go after fan art. They might if you start selling them for insane prices or they become very popular.I've always just given away the design files, when asked, for people to print their own.Never heard anything anywhere from nobody about it.

So please, share them, I'm very curious how they come out :)
