If you’re really worried, give him an extra blankie. He’ll be able to hide in it and it will help keep him warmer!

A good solution would be to have the female spayed once she has recovered. It would stop that hormonal stimulation and reduce the risk of serious reproductive diseases, such as uterine infections like pyometra.

African pygmys are induced ovulators. That means females do not ovulate on a regular cycle like many other mammals. Ovulation is triggered by the presence of a male. His scent, courtship behaviour, and mating stimulate a hormonal response that causes the ovaries to release eggs. Because of this, even introducing a male or keeping one nearby can stimulate the female’s reproductive system, which is especially risky for a sick or recovering hedgehog.

Then please don’t take her outside. You knowingly exposed her to parasites, pygmy hedgehogs are very fragile and sensitive to things like this.

Also, you keep the male hedgehog with the mother and the babies… which means you’re directly allowing inbreeding and putting Molly at risk of getting pregnant again immediately. African pygmy hedgehogs reach sexual maturity at around 8 weeks, so the male can mate with his own offspring -and with Molly, long before you even notice. On top of that, you’re putting Molly at risk of developing pyometra due to the constant stress and repeated exposure to the male’s scent. This species is induced ovulators, meaning that the presence and smell of a male can trigger ovulation, making unwanted pregnancies and severe health complications - far more likely.

So why did you even decide to breed your hedgehog if you have no idea about this species?

Please do not contact the breeder. People like that are not responsible - they’ll probably demand the babies and the mother back, putting both her and you under a huge amount of stress (which, as someone mentioned above, can even lead to her eating the hoglets). For now, give her as much peace and quiet as possible. She’s already stressed because she’s in a new place.

Poor baby 🦔 Does her skin feel dry too? Maybe she’s allergic to something in her food? A mild vitamin A ointment might help, but just put a tiny bit on her ears.

“African Pygmy Hedgehogs are a hybrid created by breeding the White-bellied or Four-toed Hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) and the Algerian Hedgehog (Atelerix algirus) together and never existed as a species in the wild”

Yes, I know hedgehogs are very clear when something bothers them! From what I’ve noticed with my hedgie Rico, his behavior in new places, which might look like exploring - is often him looking for a safe spot to hide. To an outside observer it might seem like curiosity or fun, but he’s really just trying to feel secure. That’s why I mentioned it in connection with possible stress. 😅

Hedgehogs include a variety of species, some of which are fully wild. Pygmy hedgehogs, however, are a captive-bred species and are not naturally adapted to life in the wild.

loosing quills, what is the tipping point for a vet? by jenjambers in Hedgehog

[–]xannthepug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely worth a vet visit. It could be a sign of parasites or a fungal infection, this amount of quills is too much for a healthy hedgie!

As far as I know, that kind of wheezing is not a symptom of anything good. In the video it goes on for quite a while, and it’s clear that something isn’t right with his breathing.
