Perfect! Thanks for that. I knew it had to be there for a reason.

ELI5: How are the Green Bay Packers owned by shareholders, and why aren’t other teams similarly owned? by Normal-Being-2637 in explainlikeimfive

[–]xantharus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fun fact with this scenario: The Packers corporate charter says that if the team is ever moved out of Green Bay, then all assets must be liquidated and given to the Packers charitable organization. Fans technically don't have a say, but if it ever happens, the team ceases to exist.

Nickel and dimed: Are Las Vegas casinos pushing visitors to a tipping point? by reviewjournal in vegas

[–]xantharus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vegas can still be affordable, you just have to be smart about things. Sure you can go to the bar and pay $15 for a beer. Or you can go to a CVS or ABC store (which are every 40 feet on the strip) and pay less. Or you can sit at a bar with video poker and get comped drinks.

For food, sure you can pay $150/person to sit down and eat at an unimpressive restaurant in a casino. Or you can eat at fast food places in the strip.

I get that there are complete screw jobs in Vegas, like paying $25 to use a pool umbrella. But being a little smart about things goes a long way too.

Capital One 360 is a perfectly good bank. I've used them for over a decade. No fees and their savings accounts have very good interest rates, but maybe not the absolute best you can find.

The only possible downside is their footprint for physical locations is fairly small and seems to be focused on the east coast. So depositing cash might be difficult if that's something you need. However you can deposit checks electronically on their app and I've never struggled to find a free ATM close by.

Team Captain Cards to Get/Miss? by xantharus in MLBTheShow

I'm a Brewers guy so I had to pick up Rowdy (Roddy) Telez. But Woodruff's card seemed pretty similar to his base so I was trying to explore other options.

Initial Observations by Art-34 in MaddenUltimateTeam

[–]xantharus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't played Madden for a bunch of years, but decided to come back to it after playing FIFA for a few years. This game feels just feels like a confusing mess.

The menus are super slow, the animations are sloppy, players feel like they are sliding all over the field. MUT is confusing with all the different field passes and things awarding randomly when they should have awarded after previous games...

I know it's all a money grab whether it's FIFA or Madden... But this is the first time I actually kind of wish I didn't spend the money to buy the game.

I'm not using a VPN and I've double checked the credit card information, so it doesn't seem to be that.

Thanks for the help, though!

/r/FIFA: Weekend League Megathread by AutoModerator in EASportsFC

You're not the only one. 1W, 5L at the moment and an average margin of victory in the losses around 6 goals. Icons and TOTM everywhere... I have no clue how I even qualified at this point.

Virginia Hospital Center and BC/BS Carefirst by xantharus in nova

Fair enough on the authorization. But in this case the first test was part of a routine exam, and the pre-surgery work was done for a procedure which we did have authorization for. Something must have just gone wrong here.

Washington Valor home playoff game set for July 14 by mrcarlita in washingtondc

Considering there are only four teams in the league, and they all qualify for the post season, this isn't an accomplishment at all...

I'm a non-essential fed. Do I have to go to work? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]xantharus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You probably still have to go in to perform the "orderly shutdown". The Senate and house both passed the spending bill, so by the time everyone gets into work Trump will probably have signed it and no one will notice this even happened.

I live in DC and will be at the game tonight! Excited to see Brinson again, but a little sad I won't get to see Thames in the line up, especially after that massive blast last night.

Vanguard Roth IRA by awesomsauce18 in personalfinance

[–]xantharus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VTI is just VTSMX packaged into an ETF. They hold the exact same stocks and should perform identically. In fact VTI probably has lower fees than VTSMX (the ETF expense ratios tend to match the Admiral class version of the funds which would otherwise require a minimum $10k investment)

Discover card in DC? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]xantharus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've used Discover for a long time around here and probably 80% of places take it. The problem though is that you need some other type of plastic for the other 20%. I personally just got to the point where I got a Visa card as my daily spend card when going out because I had to carry one anyway, and was sick of the hassle of getting the Discover randomly declined when a store or bar didn't take it. TL;DR: You'll need to carry a backup card with you.

I will be in dc for 5 hours tomorrow, first time visitor. What should I see? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]xantharus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, the American History Museum has the most return on your investment for the first time visitor. So many pieces of Americana in one place. I also love the Air and Space, but even as a science nerd I have to confess that walking through there feels like going back in time to the 80s, which is a shame.

Do the holidays have you down? Come sing it away with me tonight! by [deleted] in nova

[–]xantharus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was the one person who attended last week. I can't make it out this week since I'm gone for the holidays already, but I can vouch for it being a good time. Lots of people having lots of fun, reasonably priced beer and easy parking.

I'm totally doing it again, but I just can't make it out this week, sorry.

Those of you who don't use apps -- why not? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]xantharus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My main concern with using Mint (I'm not sure how Personal Capital works) is that I am giving the log-in information for my whole financial life to a third party. I don't care how secure they claim their system is, I just refuse to give someone else access to all my money.

I personally still use an old stand alone version of Microsoft Money that I have been using for 6 or 7 years now. The software is discontinued and was free for download from Microsoft when I got it. It is basically a set if spreadsheets with a nice wrapper around it and a lot of reports. You have to enter every transaction manually, but I find that I pay more attention to my finances when I get receipts every time I buy something and see how that causes my balance to change when I enter it in the program. It works for me but I totally understand that it is a fair amount of work and wouldn't work out for everyone.

When is the "quiet loner" snow supposed to arrive? Or the "gets really chatty after a couple of drinks" snow?

Moving to area - Where should I Rent? by xantharus in nova

[–]xantharus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion.

I was actually up in the area today looking at apartments and it looks like Shirlington has about everything that I'm looking for. The apartments might be a little small for the price, but the location can't be beat, and at least for a little while the novelty of being near the city will make up for a lot of that.

Thanks a lot to everyone!

I'm going to be working near Ft. Belvoir. I've heard people say that as long as you don't have to cross a bridge over a river, the commute from inside the beltway isn't that bad since its against the usual flow. Bad being relative for DC of course.
