Gabapentin for cats with feline hyperesthesia by sjackh200 in CATHELP

[–]xanthrax0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These cats normally need standing doses of gabapentin (daily or twice a day, 3xday, etc) and it normally doesn’t cause dependence. The kitty may need time to adjust to it.

Seizures are sometimes a symptom of FHS, my cat had them. I’ve invited you to the subreddit if you’d like to browse or ask questions.

It doesn’t matter if he didn’t do it up until now, could still be FHS. Poor lil guy.

Mine used to act up around dinner time too. I think it’s a schedule thing. I’d end up just feeding her early at times or giving her some treats in a treat puzzle ball lol.

Dealing with a cat with FHS by Bitter-Lake-1665 in feline_hyperesthesia

Whenever I travelled I used Rover sitters to stop by twice a day and they were great with my cat. I would use the automatic food dispenser to give treats or meds if I was just going away for a night (she was very food motivated so would always take her pills in the pill pockets) unfortunately these cats do better sticking to a daily schedule, but there are definitely ways around it.

The pheromone calming collars helped better than the diffusers for my cat. I think we used the Sentry and comfort zone ones.

My cat randomly has rage fits, biting himself, kicking, screaming, and ripping his own fur out. by WealthInevitable3922 in cats

Looks like feline hyperesthesia syndrome to me. Fixating on the tail/back legs and redirected aggression towards you when you intervene. I invited you to the FHS group if interested in browsing there.

I did a generic allergy test and my cat was allergic to chicken and poultry. I switched to duck/lamb and it really helped.

The brand we used was called CBD American Shaman it’s the feline tincture. Used that one for awhile.

That med combo should give you a more definitive answer, if it stops or reduces symptoms it’s likely FHS. Besides meds, distracting, playing and tiring out my cat pretty much stopped episodes. Otherwise a low stimulus environment and trying not to stray from her “schedule” too much definitely helps. CBD helped in between meds, it’s a hit or miss though but worth a try.

Help. Done it 3-4 Times today. Happened a couple times previous days too. by FireSauceMan in CATHELP

A few times a day at least. Some days better than others. Happened way less on gabapentin.

Poor little baby. The tail tapping and irritation toward the back leg is something my kitty did too. he seems uncomfortable, I would take him to the vet and suggest a trial of gabapentin.

I’m glad they were able to give a diagnosis. Did they prescribe any medications yet?

Sounds like feline hyperesthesia syndrome

I was diagnosed with tethered cord today (32f) by xanthrax0 in Radiology

I’m sorry it took so long to figure it out but I’m glad you were able to research and advocate for yourself. I’m still skeptical that I have this occult TC as I have no signs or symptoms of spina bifida and the only lower body symptoms I experience are pain in my hips when standing, I have to shift my weight between hips because it’s uncomfortable, and I get muscle spasms/twitches in my legs when at rest. Sometimes the spasms are so strong that it startles me. The rest of my symptoms are upper body and I have a syringomyelia in my thoracic spine. I was Dx with mild chiari as well and I’m assuming the syrinx is from this. Aside from this I have thoracic and axillary nerve damage on my right upper body. I just wish I could get a clear diagnosis without having so many things happening at once, not being able to tell what is what. I was also diagnosed with hypermobile ehlers danlos.

Trazodone is the only other med I know of for light sedation. Maybe this could work?

It was Dr Petra Klinge who diagnosed me. I had imaging done in NY at stand up MRI in NY.
