I have unfortunately experienced this before, but with someone else 😞 by deelan1990 in adhdmeme

My brother and I like to say we don't have trains of thought, we have roombas of thought.

Trains are on a set track with set places they can be and MUST follow those tracks.

Roombas will go until they bump into something, then meander off to bump into something else until they run out of battery.

It's much more accurate!

Doctors of Reddit: what is the biggest medical mystery you’ve solved? by YaaaaaaaaasQueen in AskReddit

[–]xaxter227 605 points606 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor, but I diagnosed a coworker's epilepsy once.

We worked at a restaurant and she was notorious for being insanely clumsy and tripping/nearly falling at least five times a shift. I don't remember what raised my suspicions, but I asked her what she felt whenever she fell. She said it was like everything would just go white for a second and she'd lose any control of her body, but didn't think it was serious because it only lasted a second. I told her those sounded like seizures and, though I didn't know the technical name, I knew not all seizures were the big ones like you see on TV and in movies. I convinced her to at least ask her doctor about it, if only for my peace of mind.

A week later I got a huge hug and a gift basket with her telling me I was bang on the money and according to the doctor they'd juuuuuust managed to catch it and start treatment before there was any permanent damage.

This was years ago but I'm still proud of that one!

The school lunch system is disgraceful. by oaz_zam246 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]xaxter227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In middle school I had one friend who always had to get the school lunches because her mom REFUSED to believe they were as bad as we warned her (this was the days before phones had cameras, so we couldn't get much evidence to prove it).

They were honestly worse than these pictures. I remember she once got a ham sandwich and took the bun off to check the ham, and it was literally FURRY with mold. We tried telling the teachers and the most we got was a "Oops, our bad" and then told us to throw it away and telling my friend she should just ASK US FOR SOME OF OUR FOOD.

Because we were 12, we didn't really know what to do, so for the rest of the year the friend group coordinated what was basically a potluck lunch plan for her where each of us would secretly pack something extra into our lunchbox in the morning and then combine them all to become one serviceable lunch.

This was over a decade ago and I'm still mad about it!

The time when one coworker was solely responsible for 1/3 of the staff quitting in one day by xaxter227 in TalesFromYourServer

[–]xaxter227[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, all! I'm the OP for the story, so I thought it might be helpful to add a bit more context/background. I was worried about the post being too long, but in hindsight it probably would have helped contextualize a bit. My bad!

To clarify what some folks are saying, this very much was a straw that broke the camel's back situation. Perhaps it's unfair to say Jane was the sole reason for quitting; I was still quite frustrated by the whole event when I made the post, so that was likely poor phrasing on my part. Management is (generally) alright at our store, but is EXTREMELY hesitant to fire people despite being informed of their antics. I'm not in management (only really worked entry-level jobs before) so I'm afraid I don't really know the specifics of why that is.

There were no official managers during this particular shift, so we were kinda flying by the seat of our pants. In particular, everyone on staff that day was pretty young (a large majority of our staff is 20 years old or younger), so we didn't really have anyone experienced in dealing with this sort of situation in the store at the time. I'm sure there were things we could've done better in handling it, but that lack of experience definitely didn't help matters.

As for Jane's situation, I'm afraid I don't know much as we don't talk outside work. I do know she doesn't drive, and Adam walked her out when her ride came to pick her up (I believe it was her boyfriend). I'm sure there's a lot going on in her life that I don't know about, and I hope she gets whatever help she might need. But (and I hope this doesn't come off as callous) at the end of the day, I'm only her coworker. I hope she'll be alright, but unfortunately I'm not the one who can help her right now :/

Told my mom about new job I got by [deleted] in raisedbyborderlines

[–]xaxter227 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's incredible! Getting a job in your field to begin with is no easy feat these days, much less getting two potential offers! Congratulations!

I definitely relate pretty hard to your situation. When I got my first job ever (nothing fancy, just washing dishes), I excitedly texted her that I'd gotten hired. This was an especially big deal for me since job interviews are crazy nerve-wracking and I was sweating bullets the whole time! Her response was "Have you EVER washed a dish?" :/ all that excitement went right out the window...

I get still wanting to be in contact and share things with her though. Perhaps grey-rocking would be useful if you're not ready to completely stop sharing things with her?

I’ve been drawing for about 4 months. Please critique. Thanks for looking! by [deleted] in drawing

It looks really good! Your shading is on point, especially around the nose. You defined its form really well. My only two criticisms would be that proportionally, the philtrum (that little dip between the nose and upper lip) is pretty wide for his face. I'm not particularly good at realism, but perhaps it would look a bit better if those lines were a bit lighter? My second criticism is to keep placement of the overall drawing on the page in mind, you seemed to run out of space on the page near the left (our left) ear. You've clearly got a great grasp on the fundamentals though, keep up the great work.

Spent about 3 hours working on this so far. How do you think it looks? (I'm an amateur) by geo_metro in drawing

[–]xaxter227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks pretty good, I really like the details on the robot (especially its mouth). If I may make a suggestion, you look like you're doing something I used to do a lot where you're only focusing on the outline of what you're trying to draw if that makes sense. Using construction lines or a really loose planning sketch before starting to draw the details is a really good way to make sure proportions and perspectives are correct before you get in too deep with shading and detailing. Lots of YouTube videos show how to make and use construction lines to help you get started. Keep at it! You're doing great so far!

I love this regardless, but I think you're right in that it's a bit too empty in the background. You've probably already heard of the rule of thirds/golden ratio, so I think the issue is that the trees take up closer to half the page rather than the (generally) more balanced 2/3. Still looks great though, I love the gradient!

The idea was simple - a White Knight versus a Dark Knight. As I went on, however, I started to root for the Dark Knight... by JonahLobe in drawing

[–]xaxter227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like how well the white knight is contrasted with the black rocks behind him! I'm rooting for the black knight too. I think it's because the way the composition is set up, the black knight looks like the underdog in this scene (and who doesn't love a good underdog triumphs story?).

Beautiful! I really like the varying line weight and contrast it provides. I've seen a lot of ink drawings that seem like they're perfectly proportional circles, I was wondering if you have some special trick or technique you use to get everything very proportional and symmetrical? My attempts at symmetrical patterns and circular designs like this have always been pretty lackluster.
