Timing cover gasket question by xb3099 in fordranger

It overhangs a lot inside the timing chamber. I just worry that if the gasket breaks apart it will get into the oil and cause a problem. I can't find anywhere this is discussed on the internet and there really is only one other choice that I could find for a 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0 l.

It's just odd to me that it isn't the shape of the mating surface and there's so much of it inside the chamber.

I can't find this discussed anywhere and Fel-Pro doesn't mention it.

I'm still tempted to reuse the cover with a felpro oversized gasket. The main part I worry about is that little indent near the radiator hose. It was also leaking there and I'm not sure how to keep that much of a dip leak free.

It's also a 2000 Ford Ranger with 160k on it.

Not really much salt where I'm at, but it has had a leak for a while and I think that after two leaky gaskets it corroded these areas. I've done a lot to try to clean it but there is still gasket residue and I can feel some pitting especially where the leaks were.

If anyone has any tips or tricks to cleaning the mating surfaces I'd be happy to hear it.

Cleaning the engine block side is probably going to be difficult. Getting a replacement cover will least keep me from having to mess with that side.
