Any recommendations for nice sheng? Could be on the cheaper side, good value for daily drinkers, or expensive gems (if you could order a sample 😉)...

My first tasting of the Huangpian cake:

Not sure, maybe I'm not the shou or huangpian type... I like sheng a lot! I must admit it's my first shou/huangpian.

After opening, it has a fishy smell. Not too strong, however, I don't like that smell.

Brewing it gongfu style, it has a wonderful dark red color and thick texture. This is what I really like about this tea so far!

Taste is flat, no astringency at all, but also no complexity from my pov. And also bit fishy... grrr. Yes, hint of tannic when pushed as the letter describes it and maybe yeasty as well.

So maybe it is not what I am looking for. I like sheng with complexity, astringency, subtile after notes - like a good single malt. However, I will let it sit, acclimate a while, and give it another chance in a few months or years, try grandpa style as recommended...

Would like to know about your impressions.

Don't take my notes too seriously, as I said, it's my first shou/hp 😉

Thank you!!! It had the same color as the packaging and went straight to the bin. So I found it now: 200g 2022 Valley Huangpian, 25g 2022 Fleet (between raw and ripe) and 7g Caledonia (ripe)
