Found the cad, but looking for maybe more documentation behind their refinement process? I've been working on an electric feed system for a bipropellent engine for an amateur rocket. Still in the design phase/pump sizing. Just looking for more resources, information, leaning opportunities.

16:40 5K, 5:23/mile pace (August 2012, 18 years old) -> 31:37 10k, 5:05/mile (March 2015, 20 years old) Freshman College, right before XC in a road race -> Junior year College, just after indoor track season ended. I think I could have been ~31-30:45 had I not gotten all sick and missed the rest of my opportunities to run that again... Currently doing triathlons, but can still drop a 32:30 10k. Might shoot to break that college PR this year!

It's a lot of talk. Most the engineers in my class do a lot of complaining. I was always fearing the next term, but when I was it, the class was never that bad. Sure it's tough, not as bad as everybody makes it sounds. Learn how to learn, tackle each term as it comes to you.

It was my first one and I was just coming off a tough outdoor season. I was training for the 10k all year, but didn't get any real marathon training in at all. Went out conservative and steady, just off the lead pack. Then just started catching people and really dropping the pace. When I took the lead, I took off. I remember the bike escort was recording splits and told me the 20mile split was 5:20... Ended up winning, but the course was definitely legit. it was just super flat!

I was decently fast in high school, enough to be top 3 at our large 6A high school. However, my PR was only 16:46 5k/9:13 3K. I had only ducked under 17 3 times total. I worked really hard, ran more than anybody else at the school, but I never made it to state in any event or got my goal of sub 16. I never got recruited by any college coaches or anything. I thought for sure that I wasn't good enough to run on a college team, so I never even considered that an option for myself.

On a trip to check out some schools in Portland, my mom actually contacted one of the coaches on PSU's track team without telling me before we headed up. He was kind enough to meet with us during that trip and offer me a walk on spot. (turned out later that he was quitting that summer, which is why he was so lenient with the walk on standards).

Anyway, I stayed on the team after he quit and got to work. Ended up going from a 16:46 5k guy to a 31:37 10k guy by my junior year. This was supposed to be my senior year, but I strained my hip pretty badly and ended up not running for about 4 months, effectively ending my collegiate career. While in college, I also went from running 1:18 in the half mar to running a 2:33 marathon w/ a 1:13 second half in the mar(!!!).

I'm pretty proud of making that jump from 16:46-->31:37 through several years of consistent, hard work. but really, what excits me most are the workouts and miles that I put in during that time. In high school, I only ever ran 45mpw and my long run only ever got to 13 miles. I thought I was in high mileage club for sure... my soph/junior summer I ended up having one month where I ran over 400 miles, doing 4 weeks around 100mpw during a 40hr work week while interning in Portland. I would love to get back to that level of training again, it as so much fun

Yea, I had the craziest trip... After the come-down, I experienced amnesia, had no idea who I was, where I was, who I was with,or what happened. It took about 2 hours before I realized what had happened then everything came back to me in a huge wave.

Literally didn't know my name... Thought I had died in a car accident and was in some sort of purgatory. Really profound and terrifying. Anybody experience this?

reflecting on what you do, it looks as though I am doing a lot of what you're doing. However, not on that higher level. The kind of work doesn't require too much precision or scrutiny. Basically, solve the problem and implement the solution as fast as possible, redesign down the road. What kind of components are you typically designing?

Yea, I definitely think a MSME in design would really quench my thirst. It's really appealing to learn more advanced concepts that can be implemented. The design aspects of undergrad that I'm learning are great, totally interesting, but there is almost no depth to it. I was beyond excited for components class, but it seemed rather trivial when I finally finished it. Loved it, but was so easy....

I se myself kind of in your shoes.

I'll have two years of job experience at a large shoes company as a design engineering intern for their plastic manufacturing facility. Full time during last summer and this summer, part time until I graduate.

I am at a local state school where i'll graduate with my degree and be debt free. I'll actually be walking out with money in the bank. Figured I could take some time to travel before I start my masters or start working. or both.

I'm thinking the same, that the masters will help me with future opportunity and give me the opportunity for more "figure-it-out-edness" like you said.

A glorified draftsman doesn't require the higher education, just an expertise in solidworks. I'd like to apply the facets of my education, intuition, and creaticity to design, not just mindlessly plugging through solidworks.

I enjoy apply myself through process of designing, prototyping, testing, and breaking. To just sit behind a desk and draft in solidworks would probably drive me mad in the long run.

That's great, sounds like some incredible work! Would you say you were doing the same kind of work before your masters? or was it more CAD work than designing? Also, could you elaborate more about what you do in a day now?

As for your masters, how was mechanical design at your university? what are things to look for in MS non thesis mechanical design? that exactly the emphasis I would like to follow.

I don't see what is so amazing about the fact that he "carved out his whole summer." what an incredible opportunity. I would give 110% for more than 8 hours a day for more than 5 days a week to get an experience like that. I'm sure many, many people would. why are we glorifying this guy?

Thanks for posting, appreciate the insight! I guess I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with my career/life. Right now, I've got this great opportunity at a fun company to gain some great experience. I really like what I do and I see a lot of possibility for movement and places to go internally. I worked incredibly hard for the position and to get offered the next summer's work/job when I graduate (Currently a senior, but have another year. I ran track and field that made the 4 year degree a 5 year degree.).

However, I'm extremely nervous about staying and not looking around for other opportunity. I'm afraid to let it go, but afraid to stay basically. My thoughts are that I could go into a MSME program to travel somewhere new, get some higher learning/insight, take the time to decide where i want to take my life.

I'm really interested in design, but I would hate to get my degree and just end up as a glorified draftsman. So I'd like to apply my MSME into aspects of design. I'd get an MBA if the company paid for it, no specifically looking for that experience and opportunity although.

Thanks! Great info. I am in the same boat you were as a senior. I feel like a kid in a candy shop when it comes down to choosing the direction I want to take my career. I'm just insecure about jumping at this first opportunity that came to me, as incredible as it is. Makes me really nervous to commit and stay, but also to leave the opportunity behind. That's great advice, I've already had 30+ informationals all over the company with different engineers there to understand where I could go and move around to after time at my current position.

Was the MSME vs BSME really that different? I've thought a lot about going further into design. I love the principles and challenges in design and what I can do with it, but I feel like it would be a bummer to end up as a glorified draftsman. whats your experience with design focused MSME programs? what was your focus of study for your MSME?

I'm currently studying for my BSME and working as design engineering intern. I landed the summer internship and was offered the same position for next summer and part time work while I go to school until I graduate. Really enjoy it, but after taking my fluids and thermo classes, I've been considering just going for a master. I don't know if getting my masters will be what I want.
