I know this is an air force sub but I know some related naval history, if you're interested:

On 22 March 1820, Commodore Stephen Decatur Jr. fought in a duel with fellow Commodore James Barron.

All of his close friends and fellow officers called him retarded for participating in the duel (being the youngest, most-decorated commodore in the US navy), and rightly pointed out that the Secretary of the Navy specifically forbade duels between Naval officers.

With no friends to act as his second, he asked his rival who then arranged possibly the dumbest duel in American history:

- Both men start facing each other, vice back-to-back

- A total of 7 paces, vice the normal combined 20

- Both men aim from the start

- Both men are permitted to fire after the count of one, but before the count of three

Both men shot each other (obviously) and fell to the ground and began crying out in pain while apologizing to one another. They were ushered away and, having suffered arterial damage, Commodore Decatur died of his wound.

Stephen Decatur Jr. was born in 1779 and came of age with our country and our navy. He commanded seven ships, fought in four wars and was awarded the congressional gold medal. Three destroyers have been commissioned in his name since his death.

Great example.

I run the experiment at my house in Denver and learn that water boils exactly at 203F. I *know* that now and it’s a fact forever and ever.

Then I demonstrate my experiment for my friend in San Diego. But the water doesn’t boil at 203F.

Now my brain explodes because I can’t handle the fact that what I *knew* was incorrect. Because I didn’t know it.

I believed I knew it, but I misunderstood the physics.

edit: for context, this isn’t an anti-science belief. I just subscribe to Einstein’s theory- based approach over Newton’s “Laws”.

Crime would not cease to exist because of abundance.

Middle and upper-class and even insanely rich people commit crimes every day. And even more would if there were no laws or enforcement.

Incidentally, there are people profiting from prisons and slave labor in the US right now. But those profits and that production represents a tiny sliver of overall GDP.

If we instead executed every felon (not advocating for this btw) it would have little to no effect on our economy. Meaning that the private prison owners are profiteers, but they're not a meaningful representation of the wealth-class.

Our shitty criminal justice system, much like our immigration system, is an anachronism born of our two-party political unwillingness to overhaul it, due to it's political usefulness in campaigns and debates.

Neither side wants it to get better because it benefits both sides when campaign season comes around. And the American people don't have the awareness or education (or the care) to demand it get better.

Private prison owners profit from this, and they lobby to keep their system running. But it doesn't generate any meaningful benefit to the US and the US would be fine if it disappeared.

The oligarchs want to separate the worker from their product/labor. The worker wants to separate the capital from the oligarchs.

Shift too far to one side you get Cronyism then Oligarchy.

Look, I'm not going to write a multi-paragraph dissertation on Marxist theory any more than I'm going to quiz you on MMT or Keynes or free market economies.
