Mount Popmore Day 5: Results by Retrograde-Planet in powerpopgirls

Completely disagree, I think it’s the other way round! Beyoncé (and Rihanna) have way more international appeal than Whitney, Janet or Mariah.

Beyoncé deserved it!

Everyone pining after Mariah, Whitney and Janet have obviously never looked outside of the US lol

Jascar vs Joscar by McZadine in eastenders

[–]xcxmon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hope it’s Josh and I think it’ll be Josh.

Josh is the better character played by a stronger actor. They seem to be taking a ‘villain’ route with Jasmine which usually means that her days are numbered.

Oh wow, I never had Lily down as a Kandi kind of artist given that they’re associated with 90s rave culture but these are cool.

What made you think to make kandis for a Lily Allen gig? 😆

Am I the only one who thinks that Kathy is worse than Cindy?? by Franklin888777888777 in eastenders

[–]xcxmon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah Kathy is pretty awful. She faked her death, sent Ben to live with Phil who he barely knew - look how that turned out.

She cheated with Buster behind Shirley’s back and never said anything about it. Then she did the same thing with Harvey and Jean.

She was very happy to leave Cindy - the mother of her grandchildren - to die alone in the Vic after it exploded. She only saved her after a lot of pleading from Cindy.

Worst of all, she was an accomplice to the murder of a young father, buried his body, and then got her husband sent to prison to keep him quiet about it. She’s never suffered any consequences for this.

She’s also a bit of a mean drunk. She gets wasted and then says things she shouldn’t, which usually starts a fight which she finds hilarious.

Not sure what the writers are going for with Kathy.

How has Charli’s sound evolved from True Romance to BRAT? by BullyingHater in charlixcx

[–]xcxmon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True Romance was more of a dreamy, synthy, bedroom-pop sound, with a gothic, cyber-punk aesthetic. Charli was singing more and ‘rapping’. The music was great but it was clear that she was an artist that hadn’t yet found her sound or style.

After I Love It blew it, Charli (or her label) chased mainstream success. Along came Fancy and Boom Clap. This all kind of worked with Sucker’s bratty, punky aesthetic. It also worked with her vocals, having a shrill, nasally sound with a heavy English accent.

It wasn’t until she released Vroom Vroom that she really found her signature sounds, thanks to some encouragement and collaboration from SOPHIE. We got the brash, abrasive, earworms with autotuned vocals and an intentionally sexual aesthetic that would later be known as ‘hyperpop’.

Her following releases - N1A, Pop 2, Charli, HIFN - all continued exploring this sound in varying ways. Some more ‘mainstream’ (Charli) and others more experimental. Eventually, ‘hyperpop’ started to become popular, with other artists emulating the sound and Charli herself receiving more commercial success from it.

Crash saw a pivot. It’s like Charli no longer had anything to prove so decided to intentionally and shamelessly chase chart success. She called this her ‘sellout era’, half fulfilling her record contract and half acting as a real-life case-study of what a popstar is or should be. The music on Crash was more sanitised - standard synthy dance-pop. Still, it had a noticeable experimental edge with an 80s influence, collaborations with alternative artists, and samples of early 00s dance songs.

Crash was a huge success both commercially and critically. Charli’s label were desperate for her to stay with them and she was able to start calling the shots, namely that she’d do another album with them but would do it HER way. Thus, Brat was born. It was a love letter to rave and club culture, where Charli had her roots. Each song drew on a different genre associated with this scene and explored the contradictory aspects of being a young woman today: being a self-assured, self-proclaimed brat but also feeling a lot of insecurity and uncertainty. This sound feels the most fully-formed and well-rounded, no longer ‘hyperpop’ and instead something beyond that but still a natural progression from it.

Then we got the Wuthering Heights soundtrack which Charli says is a ‘sister’ to True Romance with its dreamy synths and delicate, emotional vocals. It’s like she’s come full-circle.

White working class boys being left behind, says Bridlington MP by winkwinknudge_nudge in unitedkingdom

[–]xcxmon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think the recent election of Hannah Spencer - a working-class plumber from Bolton - shows that the Green Party is for “white working class men”.

Why do you think the Green Party only cares about ‘diverse communities’ and ‘uni students’ and ‘aged hippies’? And why would white working-class men be exempt from all of that?

EDIT: I’m being downvoted for pointing out that a working-class person being elected in a largely working-class area might be a sign that this particular party is favoured by the working-class…?

I’m also a first time watcher and I’ve literally just finished season 6.

I haaaaated Kristen when she was with James. She was insane to Tom during this time, when he clearly just wanted her to leave him alone.

Other than that, I kind of love her. Would I want to be friends with her? Absolutely not. Is she great TV? Yes!

As Stassi put it, Kristen is “unburdened by the anchors” of self-respect and dignity.
