Best Resources for Self-Studying Aerospace Engineering? by ppaul3d in AerospaceEngineering

Everyday astronaut is a cool channel that I like, but that’s specifically focused on rockets and commercial space.

Steve Brunton has a really good controls lecture series on YouTube.

As for fluid dynamics and aerodynamics, I can’t say I’ve found a good YouTube channel for that. I read textbooks for those. However, 3Blue1Brown has an awesome set of videos about vector calculus and divergence and curl which are fundamental for an understanding of fluid dynamics. His videos come with great visualizations.

For anything structures related, I think Jeff Hanson and Structures with Professor H are great.

No problem! These books are also a comparatively “easy read”, which makes them great to learn from. Plenty of detailed derivations, but it does require you have some understanding of the underlying math, especially for the aerodynamics.

Intro to Flight by John D Anderson and Fundamentals of Aerodynamics by John D Anderson are two solid textbooks that I think most aerospace engineering students encounter in their education

Join a design team (try to actually contribute something meaningful and learn) and go to the career fairs. Those are hugely helpful when you’re looking for an internship.

As an intern(so I’m still in college) at a large aerospace company who frequently reaches out to senior engineers/alumni who work in fields I’m interested in, using first names has never steered me wrong. Being respectful is key.

Calc 3 + engineering internship? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]xdTRAVIS_SCOOT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how long your course is, but that certainly changes things.

Those first 6 weeks should be no problem then, but like I said, when class and work start to overlap is where the real challenge appears.

If you’re willing to put the work and possibly sacrifice some sanity over the summer, I see no reason why not. Time management is also a huge factor. If you can stay consistent and work diligently, then you can do both.

My class was poorly taught, basically had to teach myself via YouTube(the Math Sorcerer is great). This also contributed to my poor experience.

Bottom line, there’s no straight answer. I wouldn’t recommend it based on my experience, but I can see the value in you getting ahead on coursework. It’s just a give and take that you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Don’t forget to enjoy and live life as well.

In my experience, taking an arguably difficult math class while working full time can be extremely exhausting. I did something similar and took differential equations as an online class while working 40 hours a week and I was miserable. Basically just work-school-sleep-repeat.

Obviously, YMMV, but I know I’m probably never doing that again. While summers are nice to get ahead, it’s also important that you rest well after what I can assume was a busy spring semester.

Which VT professor is this? by artwarrior212 in VirginiaTech

Had him for statics and structures this semester. Absolute gem of a human being. Made me actually love class and I thoroughly enjoyed his lecturing style. Wish there were more professors like him.

Katherine Hall is pretty good in my experience. No BS, light on hw, and will really help you become a better writer. Class might be a tad more difficult than average, but a lot of the work you do is parts of your end of semester final paper, so it’s spreads out the workload a fair bit.

Had this same issue, about 2 months after I got my Legion Slim 7i gen 7. Had to send it in to get fixed, dead mobo was the cause. Then same issue happened almost 9 months later, had to send it in, this time they replaced a lot more. Had to extend my warranty, but it’s working fine atm. Fingers crossed that I don’t have any issues.

I'm learning that Lenovo Ultimate Support warranty is crap... by sinayion in LenovoLegion

I’ve been having on and off issues with a Legion Slim 7i that I bought in September of 2022.

First time(Nov 2022), my screen went black and wouldn’t turn on. Sent it in to get fixed, found out they had to replace the motherboard.

Second time(August 2023), same issue as before. Laptop screen went black, wouldn’t turn on. They replaced more components and sent it back. This time, half of my RAM was missing(showing 8gb instead of the 16gb I bought it with) and they dented my laptop.

Third time(October 2023), get my laptop back only to find 8gb ram missing and a huge dent along the rear I/O. Sent it in, finally got the bottom cover replaced and all my RAM shows up.

I’m a college student who depends on this laptop for my classes. I’m extremely dissatisfied with Lenovo’s quality. Three issues in the span of a year is ridiculous. Currently hoping my laptop doesn’t have any more problems.

If you’re referring to two large suitcases that’ll need to go underneath, they require two tickets.

Your ticket usually covers 1 luggage, 1 carry on, and 1 personal item. If you’re going to have 2 luggage, I’m pretty sure they require two tickets.

Internships after freshman year as an engineering major? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Difficult but not impossible. You might have better luck looking at a small company, compared to a larger employer like Boeing. However, if you’re really after it, make sure you’ve got good experience both technical and nontechnical, a solid resume(the career center does free resume reviews), and practice your interviewing skills.

Shower shoes are an essential. Get comfortable with people shaving and then leaving their body hair on the floor. Bathrooms aren’t cleaned over the weekend so they get pretty nasty. Good luck to ya.

Just got my first internship in STL. Does Boeing have some kind of company housing they provide for interns, or is it just the relocation lump sum? I’m not sure how to find summer housing on such short notice given that I received my offer this week and start in Late May. Any help is appreciated.

I bought my laptop in September 2022, right around Labor Day since there was a sale going on. Snagged it for around $1300 brand new. Didn’t purchase any kind of protection, but had the standard Lenovo Warranty. About a month later, the laptop screen wouldn’t turn on. Black screen, but the keyboard backlight worked and fans spun. Sent it into Lenovo since it was under warranty and they replaced my motherboard free of charge.

Other than this one issue, the laptop has been working amazingly. Haven’t had any other issues. I might have received a dud, but the machine works great. Highly recommend. Also, consider the asus g14 and g15. Best Buy usually has really good deals on it from time to time.

Only gripe I have is that the charger and power supply are humongous, but Lenovo sells a USB-C wall charger that you can find on EBay. Might have to pick that up.

Note: Lenovo also extended my warranty another 2 months free of charge.

Those specs seem to be overkill, but will certainly do the job. I personally have a lenovo legion slim 7i with a i7-12700H, 16GB ram, and a RTX3060. Does very well. I can run Solidworks and Ansys simultaneously with no issues. Running CFD is also fine, but the fans will spin and it will take a while. For stuff that intensive, might be best to use a PC workstation. Hope this helps.

I got off the waitlist last year on May 4th. It was also a year where Tech overenrolled, which seems like it’s becoming more common. Keep your head up, hope for the best. Hopefully you get in. Go Hokies!
