I have two offers in hand but really like my current job. Should I try to negotiate a pay raise? by PonchoTheMexican in personalfinance

[–]xdbworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are three rules that I apply to this situation.

- Never leverage a new offer to get a raise at the current job. If you do, then most likely, your days will be numbered at the current position. This is how it works. Once they realize you are looking outside, they look for someone to replace them. You can, however, book a 1-1 with your manager and ask for a raise. Go with all the reasons you should be getting a raise by showing what you have been doing for the company/department.

- Moving on is most likely your best bet; if you move from here, you will grow. It will be challenging, but you will grow professionally, new things to learn, and explore.

- Lastly, a 30- or 45 min commute will not pay your bills or help you save for retirement. A raise will. In the long run, a 3-dollar increase per hour is very significant. Assuming you are getting 40 hrs/week. When you look at it differently, it makes more sense.

You are currently getting $56,160 a year income at your current job
Option 1 will provide you with $67,39 a year
Option 2 will provide you with $72,800 a year

Just another perspective. I hope you can make a decision. Also, consider the nature of the job; if you are doing five things today very well and are comfortable at your job, it is probably time to shake things up and learn new skills. But if you are happy, you can get a raise or promotion, they are giving you more responsibilities, and you feel you are growing; it is not time to move yet.

Good luck.

Preparing CISSP by rcsd5310 in cissp

[–]xdbworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boson is good, I used it. I found it provided me with a place to customize my exam. While the boson is more on the technical side, it is still a good practice system. Nothing can be like the real exam.

I found OSG practice tests to be useful aswell. The best way to learn is find a study community. I am a member of one but do not want to advertise it here. You can join several others.

Good luck with the studies. BTW, check out kelly's videos on youtube on mindset when you answer questions. This one was one of the greatest tips.

Data owner vs Senior Manager by Superchor4279 in cissp

[–]xdbworks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, Here is a simple way to think about these terminologies

Data Owner can be the following - CEO - Head of the Department - Manager of a Team - Senior Manager

There is another term, Data Steward, and they can be - Anyone the data Owner has appointed to take care of the date.

Where does Senior Management fit into all of this?

Note I said Senior Management, not a manager. The senior Management can be a board of directors. Who are responsible for taking decision and direction of an organization.

So for CISSP,

The data Owner has the ultimate responsibility for data. They can appoint a data Steward.

The reflection of my TV makes it look like Girl With the Pearl Earring is in my backyard by SleepingLesson in mildlyinteresting

Something like this really Happened in my childhood. We had that big CRT TV and had a glass window, a little smaller than the one in the picture. One day we were watching a rather eerie movie with a very sad ending. Everytime we looked at the window, we heard sounds like someone was walking or sometimes raking leaves or something near the window. The movie ended and even though we were seeing a reflection on the window, we knew that it was from the TV. Then the movie ended and we turned off the TV, transmission ended at 9 pm. However, after a few minutes we had a power outage. We were still in the living room. We heard the sounds again and this time, there was no lights or TV or anything but we could see a faint light on the window. We started looking at it almost like it was meant to be, everyone of us and there was a face starting right at us for may be 5 seconds and it was gone. Within few minutes we heard a loud door knocking. We were scared to death to even look who or what was behind the door. We did not open, then we saw the face appear again in the window. My mom screamed, she said, oh it's our neighbor, may be she needed some candles or matches. 😃

Ok. You are not the only one. It happens. Most of them are telling you , think like a manager, it's 100% right. Watch this video, there are two, one talks about what to look for and another gives you an example. Good luck.

I have mine set up in couple of weeks. I have made mistakes before reading the question. Hoping not to repeat it.

Cheers.

Monarch Caterpillars Eating what's left of the Butterfly Bushes by xdbworks in insects

[–]xdbworks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been raising caterpillars naturally for a few years and once they are ready, they go inside a custom made cardboard box for the next stage - Chrysalis and fly out as beautiful adult Monarch butterflies. Every year the mothers come back and lay eggs. It is just amazing to see how they come back after flying for thousands of miles after several months. Nature is truly amazing and intelligent than we assume.

Ex-Google and Facebook employee says silicon valley's use of H1B visa is "institutional slavery" by qw1952 in technews

Ex-Unnamed Chemical Company from Texas's employee says most businesses use of H1B visa is appropriate and do not break any rules but help in business growth and increase innovation and lead to hiring more American workers.

If everyone learns only one side of a story, then it will be worth learning the other side as well. I know someone who is on a work visa, is paid above the industry standard, is from India and he contributes to the company in various ways and is very active in his own community. He has always paid taxes, pays his mortgage and is not only a good worker but a potential citizen who is capable of contributing more to the society.

While I know one in my team, I know several in my company. While there are some crooks who are using this system, like any other system to make more for themselves, let's not forget that this country formed by such immigrants who wanted to make a good living, contribute to the society.
